My buddy is trying to get me to trade my Gigabyte GTX 670 for his Diamond 7970 BD (1025MHz / 1450 out the box ). Our cards are relatively new (about a few weeks old) & regarding to price, his card was $20 more than mine. He want to trade cuz he already own a Gigabyte 670 & he wants to have a SLI setup, figuring this would probably be the easiest way to get it if I trade with him.

As for myself, I am a single gpu user. So I'm basically fine using AMD or Nvida as long as I have my gaming performance at the end of the day for my 1080p display. My concern is the noise output at load. I've read that the reference 7970's are very loud. Sometimes to the user, this can be subjective. When gaming, is the fan noise still annoying to hear or you really don't pay any attention to it cuz of the sound effects from gaming?

I have only 3 days to decide thinking.gif ... blinksmiley.gif
If you were in this situation, would you agree to this trade?

EDIT: I OC gpu's but DEFINITELY not concerned about overvolting...Now will the 7970 / 7970 GHz will give me a great performance boost over my Gigabyte GTX 670 Windforce OC (which uses a 680 pcb)?

OP a reference HD 7970 card can get loud with voltage overclocking to 1.2 ghz. so there is a noise tradeoff unless you can confirm that the cooler is not loud with overclocking by checking it on your own. the Nvidia GTX 670 is an excellent performer. so the swap is not such a good idea.

The 670 will be a fair amount quieter, but will be slower. It's up to you.

If you have any decent noise cancelling head phonesyou won't have issues with noise. I run my fans around 60-70% depending on temps and they're quite loud if I don't have a head set on, by I don't notice them at all while gaming. I think its a good trade for you its a decent performance increase for free.

the little bit of extra noise is definitely worth the performance imo smile.gif

and then since its a reference board, theres always aftermarket cooling biggrin.gif

help yourself to a nice fps bump, and help your friend get an easy sli.

The only way the deal would be worthwhile to you is if the 7970 is a good overclocker without voltage adjustment and the 670 is not.

My 670's max oc was 1315mhz with boost. It takes my 7970 ghz 1200mhz+ to match my 670 in benchmarks.

The reference 7970 cooler is going to be a lot noisier than the 670's cooler trying to keep up to any overvolted OC.

If it weren't a reference cooler, I'd say yes. But as is, I'd say no. The slight performance boost is not worth it imho.

For all who had said it's not worth the swap for a small performance increase, I must agree with you thumb.gif After reading Gigabyte GTX 670 OC reviews & comparing it to the 7970 / 7970 GHz cards, the Gigabyte GTX 670 OC is nippin' at the 7970's tail. Not swapping my 670 biggrin.gif

Thanks for your suggestions everybody thumb.gif

just curious, what did you compare on the 670 to 7970 that made you decide to keep your card?

Gigabyte GTX 670 OC is only 2% slower than a 680 out the box & 5% faster than a 7970 out the box (check out the 1920 x 1200 chart)...
http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Gigabyte/GeForce_GTX_670_Windforce/28.html

7970 GHz Edition is 2% faster than the GTX 680 out the box which makes the 7970 GHz 4% faster than the Gigabyte GTX 670 OC out the box (check out the 1920 x 1200 chart)...
http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/HD_7970_GHz_Edition/28.html

After you OC the 7970 GHz Edition & Gigabyte GTX 670 OC, Gigabyte GTX 670 OC is 2% faster than the 7970 GHz Edition in BF3 @ 1920 X 1200 (refer to the following links to see GPU's OCed to make comparison)
http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/HD_7970_GHz_Edition/31.html
http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Gigabyte/GeForce_GTX_670_Windforce/31.html

Making these comparisons tell me that performance-wise, the Gigabyte GTX 670 OC trade blows with the 7970 (depending on the games being played). Overall performance goes to the 7970 GHz but with only a 5% to 7% lead over my Gigabyte GTX 670 OC. That's nothing to get excited over for a free swap. I'm fine with my Gigabyte 670 thumb.gif

^^go look at the benchmark leaderboards.

7970 will walk all over a 670 since it already gaps the 680 by a lot. You'd need at least 200mhz overclock on the 670 to get close to a 7970. That diamond is a ref card, and while it will be a lil louder it's worth it for the reference pcb.

And this comparo is w/o the new 13.2 betas which are even faster than the 12.11 betas. The Nvidia drivers on the other hand have not changed performance much at all.
