Z77X-UD4H - Overclocking isn't holding.

Hi Guys.

Recently installed my WC loop into my setup and starting trying to OC my 3570k.

I tried a quick and dirty 100x42, 1.2 vcore, memory at 1600, LLC sent to Extreme (no vdroop)

this boots and runs fine, but as soon as I get into windows, after 5 mins, the overclock reverts to stock 3.4ghz. When this happens, I get no crashes or freezing, it simply downclocks.
it is doing this with the F1 and latest F2h bios, seems to be a really weird problem.

All C1, C6, and EIST functions are disabled, as is Turbo Boost.

Does anyone have any ideas how to fix this?

I am going to assume you have been through the basics. Have you considered lowering LLC to Low or Medium (I have the UD5H) and proceed to increase the CPU voltage instead? It could be starved for power at the idle end. I have seen that before personally on an i7 980x gulftown. It was a bugger to troubleshoot.

In addition my beta BIOS for my board, I think F15O, was seriously screwed up. So if yours if F2h, I think its H release of beta. Try reverting back to latest stable if it is if you can help it.

It does sound more is at play then just your CPU. I suspect that the setup is slightly unstable. Being just slightly unstable, is going to make it harder and harder to diagnose than actual crashing etc. Tangent question, have you tried just stock and Prime95 testing? It is super rare, but not impossible to get a defective CPU.

Other than that, I would just lower the LLC but increase voltage to 1.25v (which is still safe) and give it another whirl.

Tried all Bioses mate, it's definitely not stability either, I've been messing with all sorts of settings and I'm thinking the board could be faulty.

Yeah I ran it stock, 1.1v for 12 hours of p95 blend the other day, passed fine.

Does IB do this if it is unstable then?

Very good question, I was unable to get mine to post with the new clock at all, without enough voltage it seems. It would constantly boot up at stock, unless I kept adding voltage. I attributed it to the beta BIOS, perhaps it is an IB thing, some internal voltage checking switch returning to stock without enough voltage?

I am afraid this potentially beyond my IB experience, I only put mine in the comp two weeks ago.

Have you tried clocking in EasyTune6?

I notice mine does this too when I tried fixed voltage overclocking to find my offset voltage, with every power saving features (turbo) turned off in bios. But now that I'm running offset voltage with turbo so it doesn't really matter much anymore. I prefer my overclock to downclock if I don't need it and turbo up when I need it. I'm still on the F1 bios tho.

I am also using Offset Voltage, not direct fixed Voltage. I have been told it is the better choice since Sandy Bridge. Later on this afternoon, I will see if I can get some snapshots of my BIOS, they should be very similar, and perhaps you can contrast/compare.

Did you turn up the current or power limits in the BIOS? They have different names, but something like Long Duration Power Limit, Short Duration Power Limit, CPU Current Limit - something like that, if you find those turn them all up. It's possible the chip is throttling for power (although it would be a little strange at that voltage and speed).

Try this, re-enable turbo, leave the Turbo and your OC's at their current settings/overclock but increase the Power Limit to ~200-250Watts. When you OC past Turbo, Turbo is auto disabled anyways.

For some reason when Turbo is disabled you can't edited the CPU power limits. Default is a meager 77W! Furthemore, IVY DOES have a a TDP limitation / check on startup! Source: ark.intel.com

I have an extremely good feeling this is it!
