Anyone Have Experience With Replacing PS3 Hard Drives?

Thread Starter
I picked this up as it was too good of a deal to pass up... $35 at Target..

Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 320 GB USB 2.0 Ultra-Portable External Hard Drive STAA320100 (Black)

i want to install this on my PS3...

Anyone know anything about taking apart external/portable hard drives? ie, ripping them out of the case?

A few more things before I attempt to take this apart..

1. I assume this is a 2.5 laptop hdd inside, but how to verify that?

2. Assumung all goes well I should just be able to do a swap right? put the 320 in my ps3, and the current one in the ps3 80gb into the case right? Easy Peezy?

3. Now HOW the hizzy do I install this into my PS3?

4. What about all my current data on the PS3 hdd, what happens to all my games and game saves?

5. My PS3 trophy's?

6. Anything else I need to know?

Depending on what model, its extremely easy, the PS3 auto supports shifting over to new drives, it will autoformat and configure, but the majority of your content has to be reacquired. Unfortunately.

Here is a real good source for information:
http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/PlayStation+3+Teardown/1260/1

Full tear downs, or guides just to upgrade the HDD, are all available. You do not have to destroy the PS3 to upgrade the HDD, it is right in front.

What you have may or may not work, you will have to disassemble the Seagate, hope it is just a standard 2.5" HDD with Sata 2 connection and power, everything else should work. It may need a quick format depending on proprietary filesystem or volumes created by the Seagate.

Anyone know anything about taking apart external/portable hard drives? ie, ripping them out of the case?

A few more things before I attempt to take this apart..

1. I assume this is a 2.5 laptop hdd inside, but how to verify that?

IF IT RUNS OFF OF USB POWER ALONE IT'S ALMOST 100% LIKELY TO BE 2.5

2. Assumung all goes well I should just be able to do a swap right? put the 320 in my ps3, and the current one in the ps3 80gb into the case right? Easy Peezy?

YUP SHOULD BE EASY TO DO

3. Now HOW the hizzy do I install this into my PS3?

UNPLUG PS3. SEARCH FOR THE LOCATION OF THE HDD BAY ON YOUR PS3, TAKE THE CADDY AND DRIVE OUT AND REPLACE WITH NEW DRIVE. WHEN TURNING ON YOUR PS3, AND SWAPPING DATA, YOUR BEST DOING IT IN SAFE MODE, IT'S QUICKER AND LESS LIKELY TO FAIL (AND IT CAN FAIL) GOOGLE HOW TO ACCESS SAFE MODE ON PS3

4. What about all my current data on the PS3 hdd, what happens to all my games and game saves? YOU CAN BACK THAT DATA UP ONTO ANOTHER USB PEN OR HARD DRIVE, AS LONG AS IT'S FAT32 AND NOT NTFS, IF YOU DONT DO THIS THEN YOU'LL NEED TO REINSTALL THE GAME DATA FOR EACH GAME & START FROM SCRATCH

5. My PS3 trophy's?
ARE LINKED TO YOUR PSN ACCOUNT AND PROVIDED YOUR PSN TROPHY SYSTEM HAS RECENTLY BEEN SYNCED WOULD BE UNAFFECTED ENTIRELEY BY THE PRESENCE OF A NEW HDD

6. Anything else I need to know?

For future reference incase you want to go even bigger, don't buy anthing bigger than an 1 TB, the PS3 will not reconize anthing bigger than 1 TB.

k all my questions answered EXCEPT the usb hard drive part..

it definitely runs off ONLY usb power.. so it IS a 2.5 hdd then... right?

So how do yall recommend I take that case above apart? Just wedge a screwdriver in there or what?
Thats what I meant by...Anyone know anything about taking apart external/portable hard drives? ie, ripping them out of the case?

let me know..

If you look online there should be plenty of guides on how to do it. Or you can have me do the work for you! biggrin.gif

Main point is just to stick a plastic card (don't use a credit card!) to pry it open. Then undo it all.
