Asrock z77 extreme 6 boot looping

Thread Starter
Just got my extreme 6 in the other day and finally got to installing the thing today. For the hell of it and because my gpu hasn't returned from rma yet I figured hey I'd just boot my previous install just to see if the pc would post/get into windows without any issues. Sadly it kept looping after i started up the pc, and the display led for codes would cycle through and display A2 for a couple of seconds before it begins to loop and repeat. Went into the bios and could stay however long i pleased without restarts and checked through sata settings. Taking a shot to left field i decided to see what would happen if i went to install windows again. Boot from the cd worked, windows installed normally. Logged into windows for the first time then restarted after I installed drivers and @#%@#$@$, it started looping again and exhibits the same behavior as mentioned already. I've swapped SATA ports, unplugged my cd drive, switch memory slots, set memory to default voltage/timings, and anything else that came to mind. I've also flashed the bios to the newest (2.60) with no issues and the bios menu remains completely accessible.

All the hardware in the build is exactly the same, simply swapped motherboards so I know the issue is not with any other motherboard. I know the memory is not on the Asrock compatibility list but I know of several people with the extreme4/6 using the samsung 30nm ram without any issues.

Any ideas? Anyone experienced this problem?

Thank you in advance!

How far does it get before it reboots? And did you ever get to the Windows desktop at any point, like before you installed any drivers?

I only got into windows after the initial install and I installed ethernet drivers and restarted. After the restart it would just loop, only posts the asrock logo then the blinking underscore and restarts and repeats.

You're probably looking at a defective board then, unfortunately.

That's kind of what I figured, but it still doesn't make sense you could get an initial boot into windows after installing it. Clearly the sata controller is working but it's like bios isn't able to find the hard drive as a boot location even when the board both recognizes and can utilize the hd.

Yeah, electronics can fail in really weird ways. With that said though, don't give up on the board just because you got a bad one. It's very good when it works.

Yea, not giving up on the board I'm just sick of RMA's at this point because getting 2 7950's with coil whine and newegg CS being absolutely horrid and never directly answering questions. It's been almost 2 months without a video card at this point but luckily Sapphire is sending me a 7970 in place of my 7950 for all the delays/troubles.

Going to try another hard drive tonight just to see if something went awry with my main drive, if that fails board is going out for rma this week.

Edit**

Turns out the board doesn't like my hard drive, for some reason or another it just doesn't want to boot a windows installing off it. My brother has the same WD blue 320gb downstairs so Im gonna swap his out real quick to see if his will boot on the e6 board, be back with results in a bit.

It won't boot with either of our WD3200AAKX drives, boots with the segate I had laying around. At a loss right now, any ideas? Can HDD's have their firmware updated, or would this be an issue on the motherboards side?

HDD's can have firmware updates, but it's unlikely any have been released for them. Did you try them on the SATA 2 or SATA 3 ports?
