Is 120Hz worth it when I average at ~50fps

Thread Starter
Hi,

In games like BF3 at intense firing scenes, I probably get about 30 fps.
I'm running Sepphire HD6950 with open shaders to match HD6970 specs (2nd BIOS switch).

I've been trying to OC my LCD to no avail and tried to use VirtuMVP with V-Sync enabled to eliminate tearing but then my fps get constant at 30fps.
I have no idea if VirtuMVP introduces input lag in games when their proprietary Vsync in on.

So I've decided that the best way to overcome this average gaming experience by finding a monitor that has 120Hz but can't compromise on panel quality.
At the end I'm thinking to get the Overlord Tempest 27" OC-able edition.

Do you guys think I should spend the money if I don't get 100+ fps? Would I notice any game difference (aside from extra pixel count and smooth mouse movement)

My rig is very new except for the GPU which I snapped from my old PC.

Can't afford GPU+Monitor at the moment. Only one of them (besides, the GPU I want is way more expensive than the monitor).

Note to self: Get rich and manufacture 16:10 IPS panels @ native 120Hz. Anyone wanna start this company with me? biggrin.gif

No its not worth it unless you get a better gpu. Or you can get the 120hz now, and get the better gpu later:)

And for people below me, Most people including myself, would prefer higher settings.

What resolution are you playing under now? You also don't need vsync on if you are not getting FPS significantly higher than your monitors refresh rate. If you are playing @ 1080 now, upgrading to 1440 will about half your FPS.

If you're not pulling more that 60 FPS, a 120+hz monitor will be a useless investment and wouldn't be able to notice any real difference.

EDIT: Unless of course, you want to turn down your settings. Try putting your BF3 on medium/low to get the best experience with a 120hz monitor thumb.gif

Sorry, not CUDA, it is NV is mentioned. I meant shaders... hope I got it right now...

I play on 1920x1200 and most of the settings are on high except shadows which I set on low.

I will eventually replace my GPU and I hope when the prices will go down by the end of 2013 I will get GTX Titan.

So, after rephrasing my question... do you think it's still pointless? Or first invest in GPU then in monitor?

I would do gpu, then monitor. A new monitor wont provide you a noticeable difference, but a new GPU definitely will.

It's like burning in my bones to complete my rig so I could finally enjoy it. Everything is new but GPU which holds me down from having my desired gaming experience.
I can't wait to have the money and/or wait for prices to go down. My rig is like having a Ferari towing a truck... I guess we all have this fantasy of winning fast cash and spend it on insane pc parts.

I would say yes. The 120hz tech is definitely noticeable no matter what, even below 120fps. And as others have said, you can still turn down your settings. It's really all up to you though.
