How hot is too hot?

short story long...
my old rig revived a recent upgrade in the form of a video card, going from my old 320mb 8800gts to a 1g650Tigtx.
windows now scores my cpu as being the weakest point in my system, so the thought of finally overclocking it crossed my mind.
i know its pretty much blasphemy to have a commando and have it run stock, but i never got around to getting some better cooling.

on to the actual question. how hot is too hot? im noticing that stock i run about 35 to 40 give or take. to overclock it even just a few increments is making a heat diff of 10 degrees or more. is this simply inefficient heat-sink? i have the stock one from the e6750.

unless anyone might have a better suggestion im looking at the COOLER MASTER Hyper 212 Plus. one thing im worried about no matter what cooler i pick is whether or not it will clear my ocz reapers with their retardedly large heatsinks.

Again, how hot is too hot? rig should be in sig. thanks

if you are using the stock cooler, then yes your temps will be far less desirable when OC'ing. a new cooler will help out nicely, but I am not too sure about your space issue. cut down the heatsinks biggrin.gif
as for your temps, you can prob get away with running 60C @ full load.

Anything below 80 degrees is fine in my eyes under full load. Stressed test via IBT which produces more heat than other stress tests.

Don't worry too much about idle clocks.

hey thanks a bunch guys. i got my cooling coming in the mail soon and so far ive gotten my 2.66 to run stable (im testing with prime95) @ 2.82 and im testing as we speak at 2.89. seems good but i think im done till my heatsink comes in as it peaked at 82 degrees. im hopping it will cool me off some 20 degrees and ill be golden to hit at least 3.2.
