So heres my problem... i need some help with streaming but i need to stream to an array of devices. So i'd like to know what software the people out there use. Im gonna be using an old pc so i dunno if i should use FreeNAS or use linux and install Serviio on it. and a list of your setups would be good as well biggrin.gif.

Here's a list of Devices im gonna stream to:

Samsung Galaxy S III
Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1
Xbox 360
WII (doesnt really matter)
Windows 8
Windows 7

Please I really need help this has been frustrating me for ages gunner.gif .Thanks in advanced

Audio of video streaming?
I'd recommend Subsonic for audio, MediaTomb for video.

and how old is your "old pc"? I wouldn't bother with FreeNAS unless you were planning to run ZFS as your file system, and ZFS has some beefy system requirements (you'd probably want a minimum of 64bit CPU + 4GB RAM)

With the exception of the xbox and wii, I've been using plex to stream to my machines around my house for a while and I'm quite pleased with it. The PC based versions are free. They have a mobile app available for streaming, but unfortunately it's $4.99. But if you're willing to spend a little bit (obviously one purchase would cover your phone and tablet). It's a pretty nice program.

I didn't realise Plex ran on Linux. I might give this a try later.

MediaTomb will work for all bar the Wii (I'm not sure there's any solution that would work for that I'm afraid). However configuring Mediatomb to do transcoding is a pig. PS3 Media Server might work out of the box: http://www.ps3mediaserver.org/ (ignore the PS3 bit, it's just a generic UPnP / DNLA video streaming with transcoding). I've not used the latter though.

Not DSL. It's discontinued and, to be quite honest, badly suited for this anyway.

Any desktop Linux distro will work (I used Arch, but you don't have to). Any server distro (Ubuntu Server, OpenSuse, CentOS, Debian). Or you could look into ready built NAS distros (eg Openfiler, Open Media Vault, Amahi).

It really depends on how proficient you are in Linux and how much you want to get your hands dirty.
