Help me understand, I have been doing some experimenting this weekend.

Thread Starter
I am using the V7 newest client in windows, I am folding on a 3930k and 2 GTX560Ti 448's.

I have been toying around with different SMP settings.

I have found that folding on 10 threads is much better than using all 12.

When I am folding lets say a 7036, when I am at SMP 12 and also folding on the GPU's this project nets my cpu roughly 23k PPD.

While folding the same project 7036, when I am set to SMP 10, and also folding on the GPU's, this project nets me 34k PPD.

That is an 11k increase while using less of my CPU. If I am to understand correctly, Nvidia GPU's take virtually no CPU cylcles, unlike ATI cards.
Is this no longer the case? Is it more efficient to dedicate some CPU to GPU? Or is this just a fluke and needs more data to be definitive.

Also, my 3930k is only OC'd to 4.2Ghz, as I am having thermal issues when I go higher than that at the moment. (this is neither here not there, just to negate the "You should be getting way more than that on that chip")

Thanks in advance for any info/insight into this smile.gif

As always, FOLD ON, OCN!

37726 FTW!

I don't think its the gpu's bringing you down when folding smp12. When you run smp 12, fah is using 100% of your cpu, but its also a low priority process, so when you use you pc for something of a higher priority, say browsing, it gives the browser some of the cpus cycles that FAH is using, which brings down you ppd. With smp 10, you have 2 free threads that aren't folding, so when you do something on the pc it uses the free threads instead of taking away from the ones folding, which leads to higher ppd.

I bet if you ran smp12, shut down any unnecessary program, and just left the pc alone, you would see more points with smp 12 then smp 10, but as soon as you started using the rig again, the points would drop

Yes it's most likely the GPUs. WUs like 807x take like 1-2% CPU for me all times. When 1 SMP thread gets slowed down it basically runs at the speed of the slowest thread as they all have to be in sync.

With one of those 807x SMP7 nets me more PPD than SMP8. Let all 10 threads run all out instead of slowing down 12 threads by several %. It's less of a loss that way, especially with multiple GPUs.

Some WUs don't like SMP 7/11. There was a beta WU just a few weeks ago that got restricted away from SMP7 as it would instant fail. Besides that one I've had no problems with SMP7. You can try your luck on SMP11 if you wish and other CPU utilization is less than 1 CPU thread.

Thanks for the info guys.

I think I am going to bail on windows now though, and just do a 10.10 Kraken/Corefix Bigadv setup.

Come to think of it, I am going to do this when I get home tonight smile.gif

Windows or Linux, you'll get the same issue (unless you don't run the GPUs)

not running the GPU's.

Gonna go nuts on the OC on the 3930k and move the gpus to another rig.

Want to join the TC on your 3930k?  That would make some team pretty happy.

I think I am going to stay just casual folding for OCN, thanks for the offer, but it always feels when I make commitments, that is when things get all wonky. I'll let you know if things change though.
