I am planning on changing my current graphics card to one GTX TITAN. Will my current PC be able to play next-gen console games well or is current PC hardware not powerful enough for that considering how well games are optimized for consoles compared to PCs? Is PC hardware available in the next few years needed to keep up with next-gen console games?
Note I said next-gen console games, not next-gen consoles.
Since the next gen of consoles are PC-based, there will be much less optimization. You're better off saving on the CPU and getting a 3820 and two titans or even just two 680's. 3930k is overkill for any 2 GPU's much more for one.
However seeing as you have a 3930k already, get either a Titan or 2 680's, your choice
Isn't a single GTX TITAN plenty for 1080p for even the most demanding games? At least that is what I've been told. Running a single 1080p 120 Hz monitor.
Secondly, I prefer single GPU over multi GPU. Willing to give up some fps for a smoother overall experience.
^ Yes, a single Titan is by far better than any of the next gen consoles. The NextBox isn't even announced yet and I can tell you 100% that a Titan will trounce it.

While that is true in absolute specs, you can't directly compare console hardware to PC hardware. Console hardware is used differently than PC hardware because all a console has to do is just play the game. This is what I am worried about. Will current top-of-the-line PC hardware keep up with next-gen console games.
However, as phillyd stated, these next-gen consoles are basically PCs without Windows and whatnot. I guess that will make it far easier to port games to the PC?

Hopefully, yes. Still, remember that consoles will likely continue to aim for 30 FPS. When they can significantly increase graphics quality by settling for 30 FPS, they will. Especially later in the consoles lifetimes when graphics are even better than today. If you want 60 FPS, you'll need twice the power.

lol wut? they're PC based but still use the same console style coding, if anything they will be able to wring more out of the hardware this generation.

I think the console to PC porting will be more taxing to PCs just because of the hardware upgrade of consoles. imHo Crysis 3 is a sign of things to come.

Nintendo's Wii was 60FPS across the board and now the WiiU is up in the air but should achieve it fine.

We need to remember a console is far lighter than any PC since its main purpose and OS was made to run just that hardware so its optimized, and later on its life with firmware updates become even more. And like you already stated in a consoles life with developers getting better and better at coding for it will have a much better looking game than when it launched.

Yup that's true about all consoles. But we all know Sony's 1st party developers will aim for 1080p60 with as little quality lost for its time.
