So set it to "Prefer Maximum Performance" and i will admit it helped a lot but its still off quite a bit.

With that set,
I noticed that the heaven benchmark locked in at 60fps no lower....no higher....used to peak past 200 and average 107
Farcry 3 played just like it did with 1 card sitting about 48-52, but not nearly as good as when i first installed the 2nd....
Crysis 3 plays pretty much the same. the cutscenes are really choppy and when u get the bow for the first time, if you look into the rain....it drops to 16fps until i move the camera elsewhere.

Any other settings in the control panel? i was always worried that playing in there would make things worse.

When you are gaming how high is the CPU usage in task manager?
Could be a bottleneck.

At the bottom in the Nvidia control panel. Disable Vsync

I not sure how to watch that while playing but I began crysis 3 and "control+alt+del" while it was bogged down to 16fps (held it there for about 30second) cpu usage was at 20%

@Stay Puft, i set Vsync to off and its identicle

If it's limited to 60fps Vsync is enabled somewhere in the drivers

I set the power managemnet mode back to "adaptive" and no change

found out nvidia brought out a beta 314.14 driver today and installed that, left the sli disabled and then restarted the computer.

So with valley benchmark running off 1/4 of my gpu's i broke the max 65fps which i was previously not able to hit with all 4

I activated sli and gave it another go and, this time being able to triple my average fps so I think were getting somewhere

now to try it in game, I still have the power management setting set back to "adaptive" however

I would suggest testing the new card by itself. It seems like you haven't tried that troubleshooting step yet. I'm not saying by any means that your most recent 690 is faulty, but it may help rule out any potential troubles that are stirring up.

Agreed, good point, nothing to lose trying.

took a little longer than anticipated.....dropped a screw into my psu while removing a card ***......lol

ok so ran valley benchmark 1.0 with only the initial card that was #1
ran an average of 77 fps peaked at 130 or so and never hit 70c degrees

removed the #1 card and replaced it with #2
pretty much identical results

Also, with no#1 only before removing, tried crysis 3 another go, but pretty much same results....
ran as high as 100fps with vsync off but gets as low as 14-16 when looking into the rain in the first bow appearance. with vsync on, if I turn prophet towards a wall where not much is going on, everything is silky smooth at 60fps even moving and looking around......but as soon as i turn into the open area again....

could i have somehow lowered the clocks with msi afterburner by accident?
according to afterburner
Core Clock at 705MHz
shader clock N/A
Memory at 3004MHz

i noticed the core spec from newegg states 915MHz.....if i move it from 705MHz to 915MHZ it is pretty much maxed out on the bar? maybe it drops lower during idle?? should I just give it a try?

Check on EVGA PrecisionX or MSI Afterburner and check what the max clock speeds are on each card under a full load. I'm not sure if the GTX 690 will boost like the single GPU cards do.
