I'm using a 2720SGL for my server (RAID 10 and RAID 5), one for my workstation (RAID 5) and a IBM M1015 (RAID10) in another machine.
Softraid actually writes metadata on the disk so if the controller goes South, you just have to change the card and you should be good to go. The M1015 is hardware RAID but doesn't have any cache however both cards are cheap.
I scored the M1015 on eBay for $75 and the 2720sgl for $77.
I would recommend either. I like softraid better as they are more tolerant to TLER issues related and stuff. Hardware RAID like Adaptec, Dell.... should be used with Enterprise disks, more expensive of course.
Let's say I'm just frugal...
