hot swappable drive issue

Thread Starter
I got a new system, gigabyte x79 up4 with a 3930K. Installed was an ssd drive for the OS and a WD HDD as an aux drive.
I wanted to add two other drives, hitachi HDD's, 3g/s into the system. So I used the next bay available. Connected power, sata cables
and they don't show up. If I connect the drives directly, they are there but not through the swappable drive. Anybody have any ideas why
this would happen and a possible solution?

1.) Your sata drives must not be run in IDE mode. They mush be a AHCI mode if you want to be able to hotswap them.

Since you have a SSD, I assume you already have manually changed your SATA ports to AHCI mode. Without AHCI you will lose TRIM support on your SSD......causing the performance of your SSD to degrade over time. So regardless of hotswap, you should have already enabled AHCI mode.

In case you have no idea what I'm taking about, I am referring to a setting in your BIOS. Your motherboard manual will explain how to change it.

2.) Windows by default does not make hot swap easy to do. You have to remove the devices through the device manager. If you dig around on the internet, there are some free applications for windows that will add your hard drive the "Safely remove and eject hardware and eject media" menu, so you can safely remove hard drives the same way you remove USB drives.

3.) There are some advanced drive options you should know about in Windows,...that slightly reduce the performance of the drive but reduce data loss in the event that is it unsafely removed. It is buried somewhere in one of the properties menu when you right click on the drive.

Let me know if you get the problem resolved!
