Why call it Morpheus? I did not take the name from the Matrix movies, but instead from Greek mythology which is the god of dreams.

Helpful Hint: Wan't to come straight back to the Index, then simply click on the next to the post heading and you will return to this section.

What I started with

What I started with was a Corsair 600T Mesh, and here are a couple stock photos of what it looks like out of the box
Stock photos of a Corsair 600T (Click to show)

What I really liked about this case was it's size, not too big and not too small. I then rushed straight in and put all my parts in and quickly removed the drive bay and cleaned the look.

Why no drive bay? (Click to show)
The drive bay was removed because I believe there is no longer a need for optical drives in a computer, yes I do have an external one which I never use (just in case, but then I also have a USB floppy drive). Everything I play is installed by digital sources. Additionally I do not expect to have anything more than two SSD as I have an 8 Bay NAS for all my storage, 16TB of goodness.

I was rather happy with this biggrin.gif

Parts List of the above layout if you are interested. (Click to show)
Intel Core i7 3930K
Corsair Dominator GT CMT16GX3M4X2133C9 16GB (4x4GB) DDR3
Corsair Air Series AF120 Quiet Edition Case Fan
Corsair Air Series SP120 Quiet Edition Case Fan Twin Pack
Corsair Graphite 600TM Mesh Window Case
ASUS Rampage IV Extreme Motherboard
Corsair Force Series GT 240GB SSD
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 690
Corsair Hydro Series H100 CPU Cooler
Corsair AX1200 Gold Power Supply

What happened to the RIVE? (Click to show)
Well, I will cut a very long story short. When I got the original parts from pccasegear.com the CPU was dead in 4 hours whilst doing a burn in, however when it went there was a very strong smell of burnt PCB in the room, I returned the CPU and the mobo but they returned the mobo with 'no fault found'... however I complained about BSOD all the time and just weird behaviour. In the end, after 4 months I could prove that the board was having issues with memory addressing. In the end when throwing Australian Consumer Law at them I got my money back, but the trust in the board was gone.

Prototyping
Marking up on galvanized sheet metal (Click to show)
As you can see galvanized sheet metal is very shinny and you are not able to scribe on it with a metal scribe and when you use a marker pen I have found that it is not as clear as a finished result using a metal scribe. Also the marker pen bleeds a bit on the bare galvanized sheet metal.

So the best solution to this is give the galvanized sheet metal a quick/light spray with some under coat. The more paint you apply the harder it is to mark.

And as you can see, you are able to scribe on the sheet of metal with the greatest of easy.

Not sure why I never thought of this before.

Indented top and front and mobo tray cut to mATX (Click to show)

Chop, Chop, Chop.. Cut, Cut, Cut.. Where has my case gone biggrin.gifWhat cutting disks I used (Click to show)
All I can say is WOW!!! These Dremel 1 1/2" Metal EZ Locking disks are just superb. I cut out the front and top of the case with only 1 and a half of these disks. I strongly recommend these disks.. also don't forget to wear a face mask/filter and safety glasses.

Time to insert my test radiator fan mount which I made out of aluminium. However I got distracted when making the top one and cut it short.. Dough.. no matter, these are just concept anyway, I will be making from steel latter on. One thing I did change with my design at the last minute was the air flow.. I was going to have intake from the front and exhaust from the top, I then came to my seances and changed both front and top as exhaust. This means a change to my dust filter idea for my radiators and also the front tray mount is now incorrect as I will need to push the radiator forward flush with the front rolleyes.gif Wait one sec, do I have a front any more.. NOPE!!, I will just keep on going and come back to this problem.

Quick spray job to hide the aluminium.

It's Christmas time, lets get those bad boy radiators in there so I can see what its going to look like.
OH YEAH (in a deep base voice), SEXY!!

Quick modification of the mobo tray so it fits in past the top radiator, will need to make a bracket that goes around the radiator so the top section of the mobo tray has some support. This was the original cut, but when I put it in my case with the mainboard I decided to cut the far right hand side some more so my pump and res would not be obstructed and a cleaner look.

Installed the modified mobo tray.
Wet rub in the bath tub, quick dry with the hair dryer.. bish bosh bash an under coat spray job at 3am

Matt Black spray job in the moring at 6am (as my Son woke me up at Sparrow Fart time), Now ready to shove all that stuff into it

760mm (30'') Bending Brake / Sheet Metal Folder (Click to show)
This is going to make my life so much simpler, and got it for a steal at AU$76.00

2.5'' HDD Mounts (Click to show)
Trying to make some HDD mounts for my 2.5" SSD to mount cleanly on the back of my motherboard tray.
2.5 HDD Tray v0.1.pdf 32k .pdf file

Made two of these in a bit of a rush, and sprayed with undercoat and then matt black as I was going away for 4 days but wanted these done. Only took 2 hours to scribe on the metal, cut, bend, spray, forced dry with heat gun and then spray again.

Mounting behind the tray of the 600T was not as good as I would have liked, but then I have chopped the mainboard tray up a bit for my project so far. Any how they do look okay on the back, I mounted both trays as I wanted to do a proper size up and I want to get another SSD very soon.

Of course, matt black is never a good color for taking photos as they all blend in and its very hard to see. I must a mitt they open up exactly as expected and every easy to screw the HDDs into these mounts. The SATA power and data cables pass nicely underneith.. however when the tray is closed flush with the mainboard tray the sata cable has a very tight bend radius. Will look and see if any improvements could be made here or not.

Water Loop

The pump consists of the following parts:

  • Bitspower Dual D5 Mod Top Extreme - POM Version (BP-2D5TOPP-BK)
  • Bitspower Dual / Single D5 Top Upgrade Kit 150 - Black (BP-D5TOPUK150P-BKBKCL)
  • Bitspower D5/MCP655 Pump Mod Kit Matte Black (x2)
  • Swiftech MCP655-PWM 12v Water Pump Module - PWM Enabled (Single Version) (x2)

And looks totally awesome when put together.

One problem that I had with my Bitspower Dual D5 Mod Top Extreme pump top was that I received it from FrozenCPU with two crossed threaded threads on the inside of the Input side, which prevented me from being able to put my D5 Top Upgrade Kit 150 one with the supplied screws and it would not seal correctly. After 5 months of battle neither FrozenCPU or Bitspower are willing to replace this faulty item, and before you say I did it.. I was already on 100% on alert as you are inserting a metal screw into soft POM plastic.. mad.gif FrozenCPU sent me faulty goods.. poor form guys.

In the end I have resulted in using M3x12mm Socket Cap screws, which should have been supplied with the 150 Mod top.

Swiftech MCP655-PWM 12v Water Pump Module - PWM Enabled (Single Version) (x2)
Buy using PWM pumps I planned that the system would regulate the flow rate as required by plugging the PWM cable into the CPU fan header on the main-board. My thinking is this, if the CPU gets hot then the pumps will drive harder causing more flow and the increase in flow rate would cool the system, well.. as long as the radiators can disperse the heat and cool the water passing through them.

Both Swiftech MCP655-PWM 12v Water Pump Module are connected to a Swiftech PWM Splitter Cable and this is plugged into the main CPU fan header on the main-board.

One thing I must state about these Swiftech MCP655-PWM pumps is that they are totally silent when running at 100% and you have no bubbles in your loop. I was expecting a hum or a droning noise, but was totally shocked to hear nothing at all. You have to open the side case and put your ear directly on the pump casings to hear the pumps.

Swiftech PWM Splitter Cable - (PWM-SC1) cable wiring diagram

Some of the Army of Bitspower Mat Black connectors, I have since changed all the green o-rings over too red.. I know you can't see them but I know that they are there.

Thoughts about the Bitspower Matt Black brass fittings, as they say "A picture is worth a thousand words".

This is what I found, not exactly what I would have expected to find.

I also have a couple Bitspower Chrome fittings and the finish on these are great, even when using tools on them they dont loose there paint.. not like the Matt Black, as an example I have tightened some of the 15mm extension fittings with my fingers and when you take a close look you can see some of the Matt Black paint has come off or is worn down mad.gif good thing I keep my trusty black marker next to me.

Final plumbing of the front, this is my 4th and final change and I am happy with it now. This allowed me to move the water pump and reservoir forward 1 inch. As you can also notice I have changed my reservoir tube from clear to iced black. This looks much better and also hides the pink tinge that keeps on coming back in the radiator coolant from first putting red coolant through my system.

Front Radiator

The Phobya Xtreme 400mm Radiator just naturally fits into the front of this case once you have removed the 5.25" & 3.5" drive bays. There is approximately 2mm on the top and 3mm on the bottom and 12mm on each side.

This is by far one of my most favorite mods to this case as I was the first to do it, and since then I have given directions on how simple this is. All you need do is de-pot rivet the 5.25" drive bay out and then stick in the radiator, it is that simple. You will need to make some mounts to hold the radiator of course.

Made a new front out of some 0.6mm galvanized sheet metal.
Quick spray with some under coat to make it easy to scribe up and then cutting out. Now ready to be bent.

Corsair Front Panel - Visio.zip 395k .zip file
Corsair Front Panel.pdf 41k .pdf file - For easy printing

Bent, sprayed Matt Black and pot riveted into the case.

Fans mounted. Of course I have threaded the sheet metal with a M3 tap.

Top Radiator

This was the most challenging and thought provoking mini project I wanted to do to this case, after falling in love with the Phobya Xtreme 400mm Radiator in the front of my computer I wanted a second one up top, I know I could have just put a 360 up there... But where is the challenge in that. thumb.gif

After putting the radiator in, and a sigh of a relief.. oops, the doors would not close as the door handles where hitting the sides of my radiator. Simple enough to fix, I just picked up my handy little cutting blade and took off a good section leaving enough for the door handles to still work as they where intended.

So now I have removed the top prototype tray with the final version.

Design Top Radiator and Fan Tray.pdf 26k .pdf file

This tray has been extended by 35mm and the depth changed to 15mm from the original prototype, this should allow me to put the top cover on and by extending the tray means I can insert this one unit (holding my all the fans and radiator) from the top of the case. So working on my case just means the removal / insert of this tray and will mean less work in pulling everything apart. Additionally it is much easier to work on.

As you can see, by having all this in one unit is much cleaner and easier to work with.

Also, all the wiring from both side of the fans go into a custom circuit board I made meaning that I no longer have cables going directly to the the main board and a huge clutter of cables have been removed. And also will assist in the control of the LEDs on this radiator. Inside and outside LEDs with have independent control.

This is what the tray looks like installed.
