HT Link & Bus Speed

Hello and thank you in advance for your time (and apologize in advance for whatever pertinent info I've left out) this is no exigency - I'm merely curious/stupid...

I am sure by now everyone is sick and tired of questions from inexperienced folks like myself re 965be overclocking - and I'm painfully aware that there are already countless threads in numerous forums addressing this chip with a wide range of circumstances (certainly some of them applying to me) - but after a few hours of reading my eyes were beginning to glaze and my incompetent monkey brain vapor-locked on me...so here I am then...

965BE @ 3.81ghz
H100 Corsair
4x4gb 1600 Corsair Vengeance @ 1333 (cmz8gx3m2a1600c9)
Asus M5A97 R2.0
MSI 7870 Twin Frozr (@1050mhz stock)
AX-750
CM Storm - Trooper

I originally just raised the multi from 17x to 19x (leaving everything else on Auto - except C&Q etc which I disabled) to get to 3.8 and immediately noticed that the mobo was rapidly adjusting the Core Voltage (from about 1.450 to 1.478, never saw it go above this) Bus Speed and HT Link.

In my reading it was mentioned that Asus boards are prone to this sort of fluctuation - which was causing the CPU (which normally idles at 32°) to quickly heat up (as high as 40°) every time I opened any application. Granted the H100 took it right back down, but when opening my browser causes an 8°difference I'm thinking something might be off eh-smiley.gif

So I set Core Voltage to 1.450 (based on low-end of Auto's spectrum) and temps went down a bit - but now the Bus Speed and HT Link are moving around even more than before, and even though the temps never get above 40° (three hours of Crysis3 hovered at 38-40° tonight) I'm wondering if I ought to be manually setting the Bus and HT Link as well?

Any advice/thoughts are appreciated, surely this was a tedious read...

Also,
- OCing has improved some games of mine...all I really care about...
- All done via BIOS...AOD is frighteningly unstable software and I would prefer to not use...
- My primary concern is what's best for the health of the rig...performance too, but less so...

Increasing the bus speed really only allows for finer tuning. With most of the modern boards capable of adjusting the multipliers of the CPU, nb and RAM speed, increasing or decreasing the bus speed is really just. To fine tune everything.

Thanks biggrin.gif

So in other words, I might as well leave it be, letting the board adjust +/- rather than manually set?

Seems the mobo feels these fluctuations are necessary, I suppose I was just wondering if perhaps - being an Asus board - it was mistaken...

...and if perhaps there were manual configurations that were optimal/preferable?
