7970 cf cooling question.

Thread Starter
hi there. I have decided on a a couple f parts on a new computer. I had a question on 7970 crossfire cooling.

I was thinking on an fractal design 4 case. gigabyte 990fx mobo. and 2x of either Sapphire Radeon HD7970 Dual-X OC HDMI Dual-DisplayPort 3GB. OR Gigabyte Radeon HD7970 Windforce 3XHDMI Dual-DisplayPort 3GB.

but I have a couple of questions.
1. can I crossfire these cards and have enough space in between for airflow. I will not be using watercooling for now. but I will fill the case with lots and lots of fans.
2. which of these cards have the highest oc potential while having a stable temp.
3. which of these cards can easily be switched to watercooling easier in the future?.

thank you for your advice.

sapphire HD 7970 with dual x cooler has unlocked votage while gigabyte HD 7970 with windforce3x cooler has locked voltage. so go with sapphire. also make sure you have atleast 3 - 4 slots gap between the 2 PCI-E graphics slots. the dual x cooler takes more than 2 slots (2.5 slot ).

Thank you, what about overclocking and reference coolers, would the dual be ok with temps?
reference coolers are ok as long as you don't increase voltage too much on stock cooler. they will be louder than custom coolers. In CF keep the heat / temps in control. 1100 mhz at stock voltage is easy to achieve.

the diamond cards are probably some of the best reference cards

Will Air cooling be enough to keep them under control? I see many people buy a branded card with a custom cooler e.g ghz edition, toxic, vaporX and the 2nd one a normal reference card. Why is that
post #8 of 13
you don't need to combine custom with reference coolers . go with 2 reference as they vent the hot air outside the cabinet. make sure your case has good airflow and cooling. ask in the HD 7900 users thread about people who are running reference HD 7970 on stock coolers in CF and custom cooler HD 7970s in CF. ask them about temps, fan noise, max OC and stability etc

see I reallt don't want to install artic accelo coolers on reference since it sounds complicated. and I beard that reference cards are not good for oc unless you water cool it.

Change the TIM to a good easy to use product like PK1. Then get your airflow in the case in order, ie. feeding the coolers plenty of fresh air and you should be able to reach a happy compromise between cooling and noise.
