Crosshair with 4gb of ram?

Thread Starter
I was wondering if I would have any trouble putting 4GB of RAM in my computer. I have a Asus Crosshair Motherboard for AMD. It does say it can handle it but at the same time I was wondering if I would get any errors? Because Ive seen threads where people ask why there 4GB isnt working or being recognized. So to cut it short will I see any problems or have to do anything to get it to work?

Unless you are running a 64-bit Operating System, you will be able to access only around 3.4GB of your RAM. The limitation is due to the number of possible addresses with 32-bits. XP Pro 64-bit and Server versions are able too, but no other version on XP can.

With 4 DIMM, you will also need to run at 2T Command Rate.

I think the same applies to 32-bit Vista anyway. You can get 4GB now, but whatever 32-bit doesn't know how to use the remaining memory will not be used until you install a 64-bit version. I could be wrong

All AMD boards do not like more than two sticks of ram. Anymore than two, and your command rate will go from 1T, to 2T.

The 2T command rate decreases performance by a notable amount....

Again, it needs to be a 64-bit OS. Vista comes in both 32-bit and 64-bit flavors... and you can only buy one or the other.

64-bit OS is better. However, driver and application support is lacking for it. Hopefully, more companies will push or fall into 64-bit and it will become better supported.

Another note... the 680i chipset is able to support 8GB! All recent processors support 64-bit processing as well. The good news is hardware is pushing forward towards 64-bit.
