[BSN] AMD Kaveri Unveiled: PC Architecture Gets GDDR5 - Page 5

Well amd stated that FM2 will be getting support for next 3 years but i guess that doesn't necessary mean that we won't see any new boards/socket. Maybe we'll see something new, like A95 lineup

I don't care if i can't buy individual sticks. The price of fm2 boards have some room to go up also... the most expensive one is like 130. Bump that up like 50 dollars or so to have the ram soldered on smile.gif

The Playstation will launch at or near $500. This APU will need to be >$200 as it will likely be the most expensive component in your PC.

AMD doesn't manufacture chips anymore. Sony paid AMD for the R&D and applicable licenses which allows a third party to manufacture the Playstation's APU.

If by DDR3 format you mean 240-pin DIMMs, probably not.
GDDR5 does not have significantly higher latency than DDR3. It has much loser timings, but this is largely offset by much higher clock speeds.

DDR3 latencies range from 10-50ns where GDDR5 is an order of magnitude higher at 100-500ns. As system specific memory, GDDR5 is no good.

AMD could have achieved more bandwidth had they gone with 256-bit @ DDR2 2133 = 68GB/s

Surely AMD is having these chips made by global foundries, and then delivering them to Sony. They'll make money off all of them, just like selling their own cpus to oems.

Edit: I'm referring to the PS4 chips.

So what about HSA? Have there been any news of programs designed for HSA yet? What about the 2.5x performance jump?

Not sure of specifics, but Microsoft owns the design to the Xbox 360 SoC and can have it manufactured were ever they want... I'm sure Sony has a similar deal. AMD and GF are as separate as Sony and Microsoft now.

There is a rumour out there for a Socket FM3 for Kaveri, according to what was recently seen in AMD's Coreboot files. However, AMD has also stated that Socket FM2 support will remain for several more generations of APUs, which should include Kaveri. To me, this indicates that FM2 and FM3 will work in an AM2-AM2+ like relationship. You can put Kaveri FM3 processor in FM2, and possibly the other way around.

This is potentially game changing news!
But, the article pointed out so many of the technical challenges, making me wonder if we will actually gddr5 implemented on motherboards. We can dream rolleyessmileyanim.gif

Wasn't referring to the APU, was talking about the motherboards as they are more likely to contain the gddr5 memory. My point was that all fm2 motherboards are relatively cheap and have room to increase in price with added features like gddr5 memory.

The whole point of an APU is to have unified memory which is supposed to arrive with Kaveri.
