[Steam] ArmA III Pre-Order/Alpha Now Available on Steam - Page 10

First of all, I just want to say that I think some of you are being completely ridiculous with your expectations for this. It's an Alpha, and I for one am shocked that it's already at such a playable state. It looks SO much better than Arma II ever did, the controls are greatly improved, and despite being in it's Alpha stages, it runs about as well on my rig as Arma II does. I'm having a ton of fun with it, and if you aren't, it's your own fault.

I have been adjusting individual settings from the autodetect settings.

I've tried:

Ultra Settings + No vSync avg - 31.85
Ultra Settings + High Texture avg - 31.9
Ultra Settings + Postprocess normal avg - 31.6
Ultra Settings + Standard Shadows avg - 31.6
Ultra Settings w/ antialiasing disabled + SweetFX Msaa - 32.9

Then I tried to combine settings to see if the gains were cumulative.

Ultra Settings + Standard Shadows + High Textures + Low Post processing avg - 31.7

Is it just me or does it seem like the graphics settings are locked?
I've managed to get much higher FPS than that, although I'm admittedly not playing on Ultra (but I am using a 6950 while you've got a 7950). I've set the game on the "High" preset, and only made a few changes to it, disabling VSync as well as Anti-Aliasing, and turning Object Draw Distance down to 1000. These settings got me an average of 45 FPS in the Infantry showcase, and it was always between 40 and 55.

Anyone complaining about performance needs to be more reasonable about the settings they run the game on, or simply wait until they have a chance to optimize it better before playing. I can't believe some of the unreasonable expectations I've read from some of you in this thread. Most AAA games don't even get SLI / Crossfire profiles until weeks or in some cases a month after their release. This is an Alpha test of a somewhat obscure game. The multi-GPU support isn't going to be there for a long while.

I am willing to bet turning the draw distance down is giving a big boost. I'll keep playing with individual settings. ARMA 2 had a couple individual settings, ATOC and AA come to mind, that were hard on performance. So far, in the settings I have done, that is not true with ARMA 3.

I have to say that I was surprised when I reduced several settings and there was no noticeable change to fps. By noticeable I mean 4 -5 fps.

Im getting 32-36 FPS on Ultra settings with my Titan in 1440p on all the test missions except the helicopter one. For some reason im in the 20's there. All in all its not too bad considering its an Alpha. I haven't even tried multiplayer yet, I'll wait till they get that fixed.

Yep, it's been documented that the helicopter showcase has major performance issues.

I have the exact same problem. Settings don't change anything, the FPS remains the same.

I started playing the alpha invite; completed the infantry and scuba showcase, did not try the vehicle one and tried the helicopter one and failed miserably.

The performance is not that great on my rig but since its an alpha im sure they are working on it. The AI is like Arma 2 sometimes its good, sometimes its just plain stupid running around like headless chickens while you shoot them.

As for the actual game, Arma 2 did not exactly have competitive mp, does anyone know if Arma 3 is heading the same way? since invites don't have mp access. Honestly if I had a solid group to play coop missions with I would probably get the game but none of my friends like these kind of games.

How is it wrong when it clearly states "Pre-order" and "Alpha"?

Because it is not a pre-order. You are not eligible for a refund under the pre-order policy because you are paying for the Alpha, not a pre-order of Arma 3.

Yes you do get Arma 3 for free when it is released, if you buy the Alpha, but thanks to clever wording it isn't classed as a pre-order and shouldn't be advertised as so here otherwise it may mislead members into thinking it is one when it is not.
