Legacy ROM vs. EFI Compatible ROM

Thread Starter
What is the difference? Which one should I use? I have the GA-X79-UD3.

In the motherboard manual, it states that EFI Compatible ROM is the default but with the latest release BIOS, Legacy ROM is the default when I load "Optimized Defaults".

The LEGACY Intel RAID ROM manages the Intel RAID ROM Utility, which can be entered for RAID users by hitting Ctrl+I.
The new EFI RAID module named "SataDriver" is no PCI ROM module, but an integrated part of the UEFI BIOS. RAID users, who have installed the OS in "clean" EFI mode (CSM disabled or set to "Auto"), can enter the "Intel(R) Rapid Storage" Utility from within the Enhanced Mode UEFI BIOS.
Big advantage for RAID users: There is no boot delay anymore, which is caused by the screening of the separate Intel RAID ROM Utility.

I don't have too much knowledge about this so I am not too clear on what you stated. frown.gif

I have one SSD (primary) and one HDD (secondary). I am on X79 and use the RST drivers and NOT the RSTe drivers.

Should I use Legacy ROM or EFI Compatible ROM? Right now I am using Legacy ROM. I've researched the differences and it seems the PC boots a little faster with EFI Compatible ROM?

Do I have to do a reformat of Windows if I change this setting?

You got it right. If you don't want to do it now, do it during next reinstall. There is no point sticking with legacy mode anymore.

Just a note, in the BIOS the setting is named "PCI ROM Priority". Doesn't this have to do with PCI cards? confused.gif

PCI ROM modules contain the firmware of some on-board device Controllers (Intel RAID Controller, Realtek Ethernet Controller etc.). They are within the BIOS and usually have nothing to do with the cards, which are within the PCI slots of the mainboard.

I've been told that if I change this setting from Legacy ROM to EFI Compatible ROM (or vise versa), I'll have to reformat. When I do reformat my computer, should I change to EFI Compatible ROM?

If you want, that the Intel SATA RAID Controller uses the EFI RAID "SataDriver" module, you have to do a fresh OS installation onto your RAID array in EFI mode. The best suitable OS for that action is Windows 8 (32/64bit).

I use BIOS for P8Z77-V from garikfox which contain EFI RAID (on right side tab in UEFI)... but after i set UEFI only & UEFI ROM First in CSM system not boot. Where is problem?
What's it complaining about, why can't you disable CSM completely (or do you have a GPU with no EFI vBIOS)? I've assumed you've installed the OS on GPT/EFI mode.
