This, a thousand times this. My father (a machine-design engineer) was actually AFRAID to run Quake II of all things on his laptop's Quadro, and said laptop is only like 5 years old.

I also read an incident where a guy had two separate GPUs and two separate Windows profiles so that he could use both a gaming GPU and a workstation GPU simply because it was "common knowledge" that you couldn't game on a workstation GPU. It would have saved him so much work to just use a workstation GPU for both.

In most cases there are no real hardware differences between say Quadro and GeForce cards.
As already stated, the Quadro 6000/5000/4000/2000 etc are based on or even exactly identical to 4th generation GTX GPUs. They high end ones might offer ECC ram, but it is not the norm.
The K5000 is a GTX 680 4GB etc.

The double precision calculations are most likely a driver issue or factor lock, i.e. GTX cards around the same chip should have the identical performance, but...that is locked out to reduce internal competition. Most of the performance benefits are due to optimized (i.e. not penalized) drivers that Quadro cards get. As far as computation goes, most CUDA/OpenCL applications give out the exact performance expected by a similarly clocked GTX card, so in most cases the GTX cards do have the upper hand.

In most non-critical-math computation tasks, the same calculation is run multiple times and then interpolated, at least that is true for most graphic applications, adobe apps, GPU renderers for 3DS Max and other modelers etc, and GTX cards are used in parallel with Quadro cards, playing the role a Tesla card would. You don't need SLI etc, just a supported card properly recognized.

Quadro cards don't game as well, simply because - as mentioned - are usually clocked lower (to reduce errors that would be trivial for gaming and increase longevity in crammed server/workstation environments that never get cleaned), and the drivers focus on apps, not games. Vice versa for gaming cards.

Well, my gtx480 holds up ok in Solidworks for simple geometries and low part numbers. Once I started stepping up complexity of the models and the number of parts in an assembly, I found it much more difficult to select points and edges. It would display an image but i'd have to hunt in the space around a point to find the actual point to select; often the actual point is a few pixels away from where it is displayed. That is something that does not happen on my computer at work that has a firepro in it. It is infuriating...

As usual Radeons perfrom better in ProE (and its sequel Creo) Solidworks, Ensight (you don't even need a workstation card for this), Lightwave, Inventor (GCN only), TCVis, Luxmark. NVIDIA does better in AutoCad, CATIA.

I'm surprised by the Maya 2013 and Specview Maya result though. http://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/AutoDesk-Maya-2013-GPU-Acceleration-166/

Also odd is the mismatch in OpenCL performance, hardwareluxx using Computemark gets different results than their Basemark result
