Asus Xonar DX with Tritton AX 720 Decoder Box

Thread Starter
I am currently planning my first gaming PC build. Currently I use the Tritton AX 720 amp with an Xbox 360 over optical. I do not use the Tritton headset. I use a pair of Creative Aurvana Live's.

I understand that I need a soundcard or audio chipset that supports Dolby Digital Live to encode game audio into a Dolby 5.1 signal. The Tritton amp will then convert that 5.1 signal into Dolby Headphone for stereo headphones.

1. Will this work?

2. Is the Tritton Amp redundant? Is there an encoder on the card that does the same job?

3. I've seen the thread but I'll ask again anyway. Is there a difference in sound quality between ALC 898 and the Xonar DX?

1. Yes it will work, provided you have a soundcard that supports Dolby Digital.

2. Pretty much, because if you get the Xonar DX... it already has Dolby Headphones support, the amp is redundant unless you are using it to drive teh CAL — which you don't need to since the CAL isn't a high impedence headphone.

3. Yes, there is quite a noticeable difference between ALC 898 and the Xonar DX.
