[BBC]Valve readies prototype Steam Box video game console - Page 3

yes i feel this isnt going to work too well. Its ok if the net result is much better AMD drivers (which it will be) and more OpenGL games which of course they will get with ports from the AMD APU OpenGL PS4
but if they lock out the desktop but include a mouse and keyboard support then there not getting a sale from me.

I want to be able to launch whatever fancy interface and apps they come up with for steam box from a Debian based Desktop via an icon / launcher be that Mint, Ubuntu etc.. this way i can also run Xen and have Windows 7 running with minimal performance loss at a click of an icon too.

Any box that can connect to a big screen TV and allow PC gamers to play their favourite steam games will work, even if the UI needs more refining.

I was very surprised that XBOX and PlayStation didn't have support for playing their games with a USB keyboards/mouse - if this steam box does, then it will definitely be a winner smile.gif

If you can play steam games on it with a USB keyboards/mouse, it might end up being a great stepping stone to bring gamers back to the PC too exclamation.gif

It will almost certainly use an x86 CPU since Valve has been doing testing with Linux on Ubuntu. As Ubuntu primarily is an x86 distro, and Valve's development PCs up until now have all been x86, Valve has no reason to buy entirely new hardware and learn all new stuff when it has no real reason to.

It will be an x86 hardware, so probably AMD because of their cheap and high performance APUs.

Even if they went for discrete graphics I would still say AMD CPU to keep costs low.

Let's assume it will be AMD based. Does that mean it will be possible to upgrade it, because AM3+ is supposed to be around for a while?

It could be an AMD Kavari APU. It'll be slower than next-gen consoles, but it'll be good enough to play any game and Valve could target that with their out of date grpahics engine.

I think some of you are missing the point of this. Steambox will be for those who don't want to build their own machine, nor want to hook up their main computer to the living room TV. If you're a system builder or enthusiast of sorts, you'll be able to build your own rig and just install Linux/Steam on it and be on your merry way with your own hardware. Same reason we have OEM's, most people just don't want to build their own computer. They want plug'n'play.

And yes, Gabe has already said you can use controllers or keyboard and mouse.

And we already have Netflix via WINE which wouldn't be hard for Valve to include a launcher in their big picture mode. And that's if Netflix doesn't make their own native one like they have for the rest of the *nix based devices out there. Quite frankly they just need a push to do it, the community has been saying it for a while but without any big backers they really have little reason to. Though they were responsible for patching WINE with the capability to run it through there.

Game library is pretty small right now, but it's grown quite impressively while in Alpha/Beta and many studios have already said they were going to start making games for Steam and Linux.

Wont only certain Steam games work on their console depending on controller support etc. And if it is a mouse and keyboard input console, then why not just stay with the PC. And wouldn't it be cheaper just to by an XBOX wired controller and plug your PC into your computer. A PC is already a Steam box no?
I think this is more for new business. I'm not sure that Steam users on PC will benefit much, unless your own a Mac.
Am I missing something?

Well sorta, I'm guessing Steam's software will take any complexity out of it. Stuff like: Games will probably have a Steambox profile with pre-configured graphics options so it will run like it's been optimized for that hardware. Maybe like PC Gaming for dummies.

yeah, cuz I would assume that the PC version and the Steam box version of the games would not be compatible with the opposite platform. So I dont know that steam would allow to play PC library on the SteamBox...but I could be wrong...they could just enable the other platform download for free if you own it on the other already. That would be sick
