That would be sick

You can already play cross platform between Windows, Linux, Mac, and Android ( when available ). Steambox will be running Linux.

Install Linux, install Steam, plug it into your TV, and run big picture mode.

It will be essentially the same experience.

Thats cool...didn't know that. So any of my games that were made for Mac would be free to install if I bought a Mac and installed Steam? Or all games are compatible?

Yes, any game that you bought that is compatible with Macs will be playable on Macs.

As long as steam lists them as compatible then yes you can play them on those platforms;

Tegra 4 wouldn't be bad but it can't compete with an AMD APU.

This.

If they can get it to run in a stripped down product like the Western Digital TV Live, then surely can develop it for Linux.

I'm more interested in the streaming option they spoke about before.

I suspect Steambox will start only serving a small niche and gain more mainstream popularity by the end of this console cycle.  At some point the major consoles are going to go entirely disc-less.  By starting now Valve is getting the jump on the competition.  I don't think they have a chance of beating the PS4 or the next Xbox directly, but the PS5 and Xbox after that will start at a huge disadvantage because Valve has already started developing this platform with the release of Steam on Linux.  They are thinking quite a few moves ahead.

Edit: Also they should pre-install Half-Life 3 on every box
