I, for one, have NO problem with this.

Microsoft had their day in court, they LOST, and they had TERMS that they AGREED TO in the court case.

They KNEW that if they failed to comply, they would be fined.

The question you should be asking here is not 'Why the Fine', the question you should ask is 'Why didn't MS just comply with their agreement?'

Well, to properly understand, you must consider the fact that for huge corporations like Microsoft, running into fines like this is what they consider to be part of the cost of doing business.... And this sum of money, while it sounds HUGE to laypeople like us, it's really a drop in the bucket for a corporation like Microsoft. This is much like BP paying a seemingly huge fine for the Deepwater Horizon disaster in the Gulf ... in reality, the fine is small to them, just part of the cost of doing business.

I think it's pretty clear that Microsoft ignored the court order because they decided that, whatever the fine was going to be, it was going to cost them LESS MONEY than making the changes that were demanded in the settlement terms.

In this day and age, when Corporations and their lobbyists buy and sell our politicians like race-car drivers, and literally WRITE OUR FRIGGIN LAWS (see: ALEC), the LAST thing I want to have happen is for these corporations to be able to just blow-off court decisions without any ramifications ... the kind of world that we'd soon be living in if our democratically-elected governments had NO recourse against corporate malfeasance ... is sure as hell not one that I care to be a part of.

Should Joe Shmoe, who created a cup holders for Ford F150, should be allowed to sue Ford for building a new model with cup holders? NO! Joe Shmoe's company only exists because Ford First created the F150. And somehow Joe Shmoe now has say as to what Ford can produce? NO.

Somehow these third party software companies have a right to dictate what runs on software that doesn't belong to them????

Microsoft is not obliged to help support or even provide all the data(?) for others to develop software for their OS(but it IS in their best interests)

Microsoft is not allowed to cripple other software( that has been developed using means MS allowed, thus not breaking any rules MS put on their OS and they have every right to put restrictions on their OS) just because they don't want them to compete( and win) with their software. Being anti-competitive is a crime, MS was accused of it, proven guilty, they even admitted it, they were punished, now MS no longer complies with the punishment
>>> They get FINED. As simple as that.

Those car analogies really don't work...

The case against MS has already ended in the US, for how long the ruling is still in effect in the EU?

There is way too much love for big corporations in this thread weirdsmiley.gif not like they care about me and you....

The absolutes here are the judgment and the fact that MS broke the terms of the judgment..

Most here are arguing the "rightness" of the judgment in the first place.

your general political views will be indicative of how you stand on this..

The deal is all because the court case in the past. It doesn't matter what is morally right or common sense right. If I agreed in a court settlement to let you come into my house and raid my fridge when ever you wanted...I'd have to let you do it. MS agreed to this crazy deal...so they have to do it. (well actually there are laws protecting my home, but you get the idea)

I was thinking the whole Netscape crud was under bridge, but apparently there was some back wash. And yes it was very good that it happened in the past. If it hadn't, the only browser on a windows system would be IE...among countless other protocol and API standards that wouldn't not exist as they do and who knows where MS would have stopped. I just think it is dumb to bring it up now...like I said, it is probably just some government official wanting the money...or else some law firm saw the break in the deal by MS and brought it to light so they could get their cut of the $730 million.

Yeah. I guess I was debating the original court case. I'm not a fan of unethical business practices and such. But something "unethical" being declared by a government should be run over with a fine tooth comb before we agree that it was just.

That pop up didn't offer different browsers, did it? I thought it was just different search engines.

Is that what got removed with Windows 7 SP1? Heh, I've paid so little attention to that it could have been gone for years. Or was it something new that was supposed to be added with SP1 in Windows 7? Hmm I am going to have to look this up.
