[Verge] EU fines Microsoft over $730 million for failing to include browser ballot in Windows 7 SP1 - Page 3

I mean will Windows install ask us if we want to use 7-zip, what browser, if we want to use an alternate shell, offer us to have python pre-packaged, and so on. I understand that copetition is important and that MS has the biggest exposure for browsers as they are able to bundle theirs with the operating system they sell. Personally I don't use IE mostly by habit and that I am comftable with the extensions and settings I have for my browser of choice. But what does a government or organization have to say about part of a bundled product ? Will Apple be forced to offer chrome as an alternative to safari on 1st boot ? I dont think any type of monopoly is good for the industry and especially the consumer, but I believe in justice, and I don't think it's wrong for MS to add a browser they made to the software bundle they sell. I don't see any justice in this decision unless the EU orders software companies to be consistent on the matter and that any company who sells an OS should include a certain # of alternatives to all of the included software (yay 20 hour OS installs + much download *sarcastic*)

AM I missing the whole point ? Should I be happy that the "giant" is being forced to do something ? What are your thoughts ?

I completely agree, it is their software package, they can add what they make. I also dont want a bloated up OS that gives options to install all the alternatives there possibly are for things, that's just ridiculous and this makes it sound like they've crossed the line into just that area.

Im almost certain microsoft ignored that court order on purpose figuring the promotion of IE in w7 was worth that kind of money.

This represents my opinion on the situation, it's not like they pay governments and make laws to force a monopoly, they just sell a bundled product and people choose this one over others.

Another though on the situation: If I led a major software company like MS, and I were to list and provide a link to other companies applications I would have them pay to be on my list. As the software developer shouldn't I be allowed making my software the way I want it ? (include the links and references I want)

lol, random thought. This is along the lines of forcing EA to give you a copy of COD when you buy BF3, you know to avoid them having a manopoly of FPS games.....

A more reasonable request would be forcing MS to gie end user's the ability to easily remove internet explorer from the system entirely. Now, even though I have Chrome set as my default Browser there are still some windows feature's that will only open IE.

Sorry, Hope that made sense.
I loath Apple with ever fiber of my being.

I also applaud them, They have made mind boggling amounts of money off over charging and under delivering, crushing innovation, and making proper ass's of themselves. on such a mind boggling scale it hurts!

There are these brands that you pay for the name not the product or the very little functionality you may get. It's like addiction, you eat whatever they serve.

This is the reason that the agreement was created in the first place. Microsoft was being anti-competitive, by making it difficult to replace the default browser. Some of you may not remember Windows 98, it was really bad, all 'explorer' windows were actually Internet Explorer windows, (which was a huge security flaw), and hence impossible to use OS without IE installed.

This thread is a disaster waiting to happen.

Anyone who calls this ridiculous or assumes this is simply about people apparently not having a choice are under the wrong impression entirely.

Oh and when you say "since when did people not have a choice" which browser do you have to use when you go to download another browser? Internet Explorer. How many ads are on it's homepage? Many. How many ads are on the Firefox browser homepage? None How many ads are on the Chrome homepage? None Opera? Is it, or is it not, thanks to this anti-trust case that other browsers can now fully enjoy many features of Windows that were previously artificially locked out to them and only available to IE? Yes it is.

Learn the history of the case instead of simply reading the article and spewing pathetic rubbish in response.
