Desktop or laptop

Thread Starter
Hey I am going to get a gaming desktop or a laptop but I can't decide I travel to my mom and dads a lot so I am on the road a lot what should I get?
Well, if you travel a lot, you're going to really struggle with a big rig, monitor and peripherals...

Depends on how much you like gaming too. You're going to be somewhat limited with a laptop and the better you want it to be, the price is going to rise like crazy...

The equivalent laptop will cost quite a bit more than the desktop too. What sort of budget are you going to be working with?

if you really and truly travel A LOT then definitely just get a gaming laptop from Asus or Sager.

obviously a desktop is a better value, more comfortable, and faster but it will require a little time to pack it up and move it and then set it up again.

If you want mobility, but not constantly on the move, you should look into Mini-ITX desktops. There are some nice mobos for those, but the hard part is finding the perfect case (since there aren't that many selections) and getting the CPU cooler to fit. Even slim ones may not fit.

Agreed, even a micro-atx would be fine. That is, if you have a screen to use at both houses. If you don't, a laptop will probably be your best bet. As long as the laptop isnt an HP, you will be fine.

I have to agree with this. My personal experience with laptops is the short lifespan (little to no upgradability) combined with high expense and for the most part limitted hardware. For gaming I can't see ever doing a laptop. I usually recommend friends and family to build into a small cube case with a handle on it. Hook it up via HDMI to a tv or monitor wherever you are headed and you are good to go. Browsing these forums will confirm that you can stuff a lot into a small package.

You could also attach the monitor to the side of the case and include a screen protector. Might make it more bulky, but it's harder to move two separate objects.

And perhaps even a cardboard compartment for the keyboard and mouse on the other side...

I plan to spend from 700 dollars to 1500 dollars and I've heard that desktops work much better and are upgradeable

Precicely. I'm going out on a limb here and assuming you have never built a pc. If I'm right, that's perfectly fine and there are plenty of people on this site that can help you. The fact remains that with a laptop the most you can typically upgrade is the ram and hard drive. Neither of those will reap huge gains in the gaming department. A prebuilt OE desktop is a bit more upgradable (usually) with expansion cards, like newer video cards which is what will impact your gaming the most. If you build your own the limits are your imagination and your wallet.
