[ Case Mod ] Lan Boy Air - Full Steel Lanboy

Thread Starter
hi,

I have start moding my lanboy air , i want to make custom steel pannel for both sides and top.
I plan to paint it blue and make the brackets black.with some blue or white lighting.
in the front side pannel i want to make a double 140mm cut in order to put 280 rad.
i want to raise the top and make a double 120mm cut for 240 rad.
In the front of the pannel near the bays aera i want to make a double 120mm cut and put white enermax cluster fans.

I bought a 600 x 1000 mm 1,5 mm thick steel pannel. from that i can cut two side pannel and i m left with a stripe for the top and maibe a front. I have a smaller band left to make bracket to fix the pannel to the back.

I cutted the two pannel and i have the design for the front pannel ready. i m now working on the brackets.
I work with a handsaw, drill, dremmel and files. No laser cutting or CNC machining , fully done by hand !
this is 100% non destructive "mod", i don't change anything on the original frame of the case you can go back to a normal lanboy anytime.

System:
Cpu: Intel E8500
Mobo: Asus P5E3
Ram: OCZ reaper X hpc 2x2gb
Gpu: HIS IceQ X Turbo hd 6950
Hdd: Samsung Spinpoint F3 500 gb
Psu: Corsair GS800
Cooling : 4x Alpenfohn wing boost orange 140 mm
2x Enermax cluster white 120 mm, 2x Enermax cluster white 80 mm,
ASUS silent square pro on cpu (h100 is also an option )
antec 920 with 2x Noctua NF-P12 on gpu (stock look better so for picture, as the cooler of my card match the color of the build , same for the silent square pro )
2x Noctua NF-S12B FLX

Love the SFF stuff. You've done a nice job marking that up. Look forward to seeing the mod.

finally i have worked on the other side panel which is just plain so i can test the color and it match perfectly with the blue of the case smile.gif
i have a few problems with holes placement because the bracket for the mobo tray come fix on the frames , it s my bad because i had not seen it and taken in into account but stil i can fix the panel at both side and not in the middle , i will maybe fix that later but the back in not maid to be seen that much so ,.....

i hope i can finish a set of bracket tomorrow to test one finished side. but i have to do some bending and the best i have is a 30 bucks vice and a hammer , gonna do it redneck style tongue.gif

this is the pannel painted and it stil need to be varnish.

i have bend the first 3 brackets on my ghetto setup next to my waffel tongue.gif
this is a 25 bucks vice , don't buy that to do anything else then bending or light filing because it s so cheap it s spin really easily , locking systeme for the rotation sucks.

bracket

one panel fixation finished

why can't these case manufacturer use metric system threads GRRR.
much more logical and easier to work in mechanic with a 10 base.
all these thumbscrew are useless to me now ,.....

What tap size are you using? or are you using bolts to attach the side panels?
I brought myself a 6-32 tap and it cost me £11 :@ Stupidly expensive.

Is that regular masking tape? i find the glue can stay stuck if left for to long.

Keep up the good work (:

thanks

i use the original hole of the case to fix it . so i will use the original thumbscrew there and some M3 allen bolt for the rest like fixing the bracket to the panel.

i have ton of screw from computer hardware but they are not metric thread so i can't buy any nuts for them because i live in europe and there you will never find anything else then metric in hardware stores. maybe in uk but it s not practical.

i don't need any tap for this build because i make no change to the original frame , in the front you already have hole that go trough the frame so i will bolt it too.

some tools are really expensive , i wanted a conical drill bit to make holes clean faster but it 's 30 bucks , i will stick to my files.

i can't even find black screw at my hardware store so i'll have to paint some damn M3 allen screw ,....... everything for the back panel is ready , just the paint drying ,......

yep it's regular masking tape but anyway it gonna be sanded before paint and cleaned multiple time so i m not worried about that, the advantage it's the best to draw on i find.

if anybody plan to do any work with steel keep in mind that once you start touching it and manipulating it , it will start rusting after a few days unless it s stainless so you can't start and finish one month latter.
if you want to avoid that you can wear glove or keep it well oiled until you paint it but it s messy.

Today i'm gonna start making the cuts for rads and fans on the front side pannel while the other thing are drying.

doing it old school with drill and files , because i have better control on the angle. it's a pretty good technic for the round fan hole too, i think it give you the most clean results.
