Help with Cheap Budget Build

Thread Starter
My dad is a automotive technician at a GM Dealership and at work he uses special software (can't remember the names of the software right now). The computer he has now is an old HP desktop with a socket 939 AMD Athlon 64 3800+ single core cpu, 1.5GB of DDR RAM, a 40GB IDE drive, windows xp pro, and no dedicated graphics card. He has recently been complaining on how terribly slow the computer runs with the software he's using. He brought the computer home and I took a look at it, after just a few seconds discovered that the software he uses runs in a virtual machine, and came to the conclusion that that was why the computer seems to run slow.

Now I want to build him a cheap computer that will be able to handle the vm's better than what he has now, he wants it to be as cheap as possible (budget around ~300 CAD or less). I tried to build something that I think might be alright but I'd like to check to make sure it would be enough to handle what he needs, I put it together in ca.pcpartpicker.com. http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/p/I7jL

P.S. will the micro atx board fit in this case? (this is a very similar computer to his, slightly different specs, but same case)

Thanks for your reply, that looks pretty good too, I'll have to ask him to see what he thinks (I'm at school right now). Quick question though, what's the difference between the Pentium G860 and the i3-2100 (other than 0.1GHz clock difference), is it just the IGP? and is it worth the extra $50?

i3 also has 2 virtual cores which would help with multithreaded tasks and should help with VMs.

Also make sure you get a 2x2GB of RAM, that way you can utilize dual channel.

There's a few small difference's, but I'm not sure any are a real advantage to your Dad. The i3 supports Hyperthreading, AVX extensions, and then there's some chipset dependent Intel software which will only work with an i3 or better. Things like: QuickSync and Smart Response Technology (ssd caching).

Ahh, didn't realize the i3 had HT, yes that would be better for him since he's using VMs, and yea I'll probably go with 2x2GB, I looked at 1x4GB in case for future upgrades if he wanted to get more, but that will probably not happen and he will only have a 32bit OS probably anyways.

I'm not sure about QuickSync, but he won't use ssd caching and the HT is definitely a bonus. I'm going to run all this past him when I get home tonight and see what he thinks.

Thanks for your help guys +rep to you both thumb.gif

the g860 is a SEVERELY under rated CPU however in this case the 2100 will do you quite a bit better for a VM
Please get dual chan memory as it also should help, also I'm not seeing an OS.

btw I agree with getting another case as OEM cases tend to be a real PAIN and with one that old there is a possibility of it having proprietary mounting, which would be really not ideal for mounting the new board

but in answer to your question yes the current mobo in that case is a Micro ATX

Got the OS under control, aside from working at the Dealership he also teaches automotive 2 days a week at a college, and can get Win7 for $7 redface.gif. As far as the other programs, they are provided for him by the dealership. And I didn't know retailers gave deals for pc components on Saint Patricks Day!! That's awesome, he's not in a huge hurry to get this up running I don't think, so maybe we'll wait for some Saint Patricks Day Deals then. Thanks for the suggestion thumb.gif
