[Gamespot] Age of Empires II HD arriving April 9 - Page 24

I've been playing AOE2 HD since friday. I know the HD stuff wasn't that HD and didn't add anything worth mentioning at all.
However, the fact that it is actually working properly without having to use any color fixes is making the money worth it.
Also the Multiplayer thats runs smoothly in general and the max population cap that actually is 500 now!!!

Although I am enjoying the game, there still are alot of bugs.

When hosting a private or friends game, other played that aren't known are still able to join your game ( which is completely dumb and annoying ).
Also, when playing with 8 players with roughly 1000 units running around the map, I'm noticing some micro stuttering. The game just doesn't feel smooth at all.
I do remember this bug from the original AOE2.

Interesting bit of information there for me. I can't say I want to pay fullprice for it though, not even the 10% pre-order discount was enough of a sweetener for me.. Although so far it looks a little, well, nostalgic. xD

For those who dont want to pay for the AOE2HD, but experiencing rainbow colors and still would like to get the old version to run on Win7, here is how:

Open notepad and enter the following info:

taskkill /F /IM Explorer.exe
[Path to game executable]
start explorer.exe

Save it as a .bat file instead of a normal .txt file and use this to start the game.

Example:

Filename: AoE2.bat

Containing the following:

taskkill /F /IM Explorer.exe
C:\Program Files (x86)\AoE2\AoE2.exe
start explorer.exe

Easier to download UserPatch, hold CTRL when pressing install to keep the game version, but updating some essential things

Forget about the HD release, this mod fixes most the issues, it fixes the colour issues, supports any resolution, multilayer works flawlessly (lanned it the other weekend) and damn challenging AI
Not to mention it adds new races and unlimited Pop cap (Which is insane, haven't tried it out, I generally battle to hit 200 pop cap, before AI destroys me frown.gif )

Heard the HD remake has lots of lag/stuttering problems if so its a joke they are charging 20$ for it when some mod does it way better and adds more for free.

It did have tons of problems when released. Most lagg and XP-related problems seems to be fixed now though. There are still a lot of problems and bugs, but they're working on patching it. I mainly bought it because of Steam multiplayer and Steam workshop. All my friends play on Steam and I was the only one to ever use Voobly/GameRanger. Now I can easily play with my friends without them having to download another client.

How the hell do can I build siege workshops in this Steam version? Can't figure out how to do it at all... is it only certain races? Do I have to learn something specific at the University?

IIRC, you need an archery range before. It's on the military page on the villager

Siege Workshop should be buildable buy all races but there may be 1 or 2 that dont get it. Pretty sure everyone does though, but not all races get all units. The Siege Workshop can only be built starting at a certain tech level, just like in the original. Tech level 3 I think, maybe 4.
