RAM mis match questions

Thread Starter
so my current ran is a dual channel kit g.skill sniper 2x4gb sticks. i wanna upgrade by adding a 2x8gb g.skill sniper dual channel kit so that i would have 24gb of ram but i was reading in the description of the RAM on newegg that i shouldn't mix this with another set of RAM but i looked around n it said that for every RAM on the site. If i did add the 16gb of ram to my rig would that cause a problem? this is my current ram http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231416

and this is the one i wanna add http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231609

as u can see everything on the is the same so it should be fine right?

Only though testing will you know.. they will either:

A. Not boot / work at all.

B. Boot and work fine, but at a lower setting like DDR3-1333/1066.

(best case)
C. Work fine at DDR3-1600 CL9.

Good luck!

Cheers

You should be fine. Unless the timings are different. Make sure the serial # are the same.

The problem I ran into is I bought a second set of memory just a different color so i thought.
The normal timings are the same 9-9-9-24 1600Mhz but some of the other timings are different so I can't run the set together. It crashes/bsod at any clock speed frown.gif

I wouldn't mix the 2x4GB modules with the 2x8GB kit. You will, in all likely hood be mixing different ICs, with different characteristics and that is what leads to compatibility issues, especially if you are wanting to do any overclocking on the memory.

Also, have you researched the use of 8GB modules with your Z77 EVGA boards? I ask because when it was first released they had problems running 4GB modules and it took several BIOS updates to get that ironed out. Unless you know for a fact that others are running 8Gb sticks without issues, I'd be a little cautious.
