Questions before switching to the red team!

Thread Starter
I currently own two gtx 680 in sli with a sound card in between. I would like to up my vram and find the 3 gb 7970 to be a better value than the 4gb gtx680 for 1440p gaming. I plan to buy two of whatever I choose and since I don't see getting more than $400 for my used gtx680 (each) I would like to stay as low cost as possible but still appreciate good performance. My two questions:

1) pertaining to cooling. Since i have a pci sound card potentially sandwiched between my 7970's do i need to go with a blower style card or will a sapphire vapor x be alright with one fan blocked by the sound card?

2) i know since these new drivers were released the 7970's have been kicking the gtx680's butt. Do these drivers also enhance the non-ghz edition cards to be better than the gtx680's?

3) ok one more... Is there any extra potential for overclocking given by getting a ghz edition card? Is it worth the extra money?

Thanks for all the replies. I want to keep this switch as painless to my wallet as possible. If there is an advantage to buying the ~$400 reference cards let me know smile.gif

1) Assuming good air flow in case the vapor-x will most likely be fine
2) Drivers affect all versions of 7970s
3) Not really, just a matter of chance. Mostly paying for better cooling which potentially allow for higher overclocking as well.

Advantage of blower styler reference cards is usually for water cooling and voltage unlocked. Also useful if running tri/quad crossfire or have a case that doesn't have good airflow.
