Reccomend a VGA cooler

post #1 of 10
Thread Starter
I own a XFX HD 6850 2gb card (HD-695X-CNFC), non reference it was one of their cheaper cards and I'm looking for a new VGA cooler to replace the really bad one that came with the card.

Main thought should I go for a two or three fan cooler? Does a third fan help a lot? maybe but I think it will be too loud.

You should look into getting a Prolimatech MK-26. If you're in the States, it's only $65 on newegg with 10% off, but doesn't come with fans. You get to pick your own fans which is way better. If you pick quiet fans, this cooler is very quiet. I run my fans at the lowest rpms and my card idles at 35C compared to 55C with the stock Windforce cooler. Temps on load dropped another 20C and it is WAY quieter.

Unless you plan to Crossfire or SLI, the size shouldn't be an issue either.

I just recently installed the Arctic Accelero Twin Turbo II on my GTX 570. It's currently $39.99 at Newegg http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835186052 . My load temps went from 62C and really loud to 48C and really quiet. Idle went from low 30's to mid 20's.

I would recommend one of Artic coolers as well. Quite affordable, too.

The TT2 should be more than enough. The MK-26 might be a bit overkill for your needs.

MKK-26 will likely result in bending the card if you don't have a support for it, the Twin Turbo II is also ~50% cheaper when you include fan cost

When I purchase VGA cooling, I always consider the price in addition to the card price. If it's so much that you could of bought a faster card, I don't think it's worth it. I would get the Twin TurboII, it will be more than what you need at a great price.

true, personally though, if i buy an aftermarket VGA cooler i want to chose my own fans, preferably 120mm.

@AlphaC
You have to consider the significant difference in build quality (and performance) when looking at the price though.

You might be better doing the mod where you put a closed loop water cooler on the card, it will reduce the weight on the card and it will take up led space in the motherboard.

I put a H55 on and the maximum temperature I get not is 63°C on an 580 (clocked at 900/2155 with 1.2v). Just remember to cool the VRM with a fan and heat-sinks if your overclocking.
