MicroATX MOBO Crossfired 7950s - Which aftermarket cooler to use?

Hey all,

So I've recently built my first gaming PC. Picture:

As you can see, the spacing between the 2 graphics cards is so little, and this is causing some heating issues with the bottom card. I'm getting a difference in T of about 20C. Running Crysis 3 for about an hour, I get max temps of 72 for the top card, and 90 for the bottom. I'm in the market for an effective aftermarket cooling solution for the bottom card only, so that I can start experimenting with OCing. Spacing is clearly an issue, and I'm yet to have found one that would 'safely' fit. I've considered this one:

http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages..._review,1.html

However I'm still not sure of the dimensions of it relative to my current cards (XFX 7950). Can anyone here suggest a solution? I'm currently in the process of replacing the stock intake fans with better ones (AP121 for the top fan, Scythe slipstream for the bottom).

Look forward to the help!

mod gpu with a closed loop cooler

there is a special kit made by asetek that makes the coolers for thermaltake.. it may work in your case..
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Asetek-760GC-Combo-Liquid-Cooler-NVIDIA-GTX-470-480-570-580-/280965116990?pt=US_CPU_Fans_Heatsinks&hash=item416ad3743e

the hose from the 49mm rad to the first pump/block is short.. i actually modded mine by simply raising up the hose above the pump and the rad, cut the hose (added a short lenght of 1/4 with some barbed hose connectors) and filled the rest of the hose with distilled water.. ( i didnt drain the system to keep the properties of the fluid in the system)

you can put one on the cpu ( you may need a shim depending on the chip.. ask in the forum.)
dwood has a site trip t customs and a website but the link iludes me right now.. he makes killer custom brackets for the mod with fan mounts for vrm cooling.. memory heat sinks and vrm heatsinks will be suggested if your card doesnt have them when you remove the heatsink.

my thought is if you reduce the heat from the 2nd card out of the case you should be much better off.
i dont know if you could mod both of those with the space you have.. because you would need a place for the rad.
hope this helps it seems like this is perfect for a small case mod.

by the way slick little setup.

Edit: which way is the air flow.. is it going out the back?
also i just noticed the dual fans in the front .. im on a ipad..
you could put the rad for the dual clc on the front but does the side cover have holes in it to draw air in?

anyway this should give you some ideas.. back to work.

sunset, thank you - that was very informative and it's definitely caught my curiosity.

Being a newbuilder, I'd like to know if there are any comprehensive guides out there to do this?

Also, to complete this build, what do I need to purchase? What I've gathered so far:

Asetek GPU cooler which includes a Rad, tubing and heatsink - this is exactly the same as the thermaltake 2.0 performer in my current build, am I right?

One of the mounts from here: http://triptcc.com/shop/ - Which of these am I looking for? Whats the function of the copper shim? And if I get the H60/80 fan bracket, all I need to do is install the fan? Sorry for all the questions, this is very new to me!

Is there anything else I'd need? I'm based in the UK so I'd have to order these from the US - so I'd like to make sure I cover all the bases!

EDIT: Sorry I missed your question, Airflow is from left to right on that picture. The CPU cooler's rads are the exhaust.

Furthermore, If I were to Mod my bottom gpu, could I just replace one of the intake fans with the rad for the GPU cooler?

check out the top link i posted its a forum with all of the info in it. A lot of people have done this mod and the beauty if it is the low cost and great performance with low noise.

ill answer this question here but in the future it would be helpful to post in the red-mod section so you can get the advise of a lot of people.. more heads are better than one.. and then you can decide how to proceed.

I tried to give you a teaser of the things you will need but in order to go into detail and see actual photos and talk to people that possibly have experience with the small area i always point them to that forum.. a lot of people in there have the dwood bracket ( i dont yet) and they can give you advise about fitting it in that small case.. as well as links to memory heat sinks and the shim if needed..

the shim is for some new cards that have the gpu recessed below the lip of the heat spreader on the gpu. so basicly there is a gap if you dont use a shim its bad news.. :> the pump wont hit the gpu.
while this is not the case on most cards it is on some.

you can find out about what thermal paste is reccomended and lots of tips and tricks.

the main difference in the model i sent the link to is that it has 2 pump/blocks..
so in a tight space you "may" be able to cool 2 gpus.. .or one gpu and a cpu with one rad.

more importantly the mod has been done world wide and there are people in the forum from your side of the ocean ;> they can give places to get anything you need.

btw the rads as you know are taller than the fan area.. ( there might be one available that will allow you to fit it in the fan area but it would be smaller.. i think i saw one (new) on the www.asetek site or on facebook.. it might not be out yet..
most people that cool 2 cards use 2 rads.. but space can be a problem.. so thats when we get creative..

oh yea there is one more option that i have been looking at but since i just bought a bunch of hardware i cant get it to test..
this unit looks real slick and may be ideal for your case...
swiftech has a new closed loop cooler that can be modded with a pump that is strong enough for other items..
it ships as a closed kit.. ready to go.. 240 rad.. :> it would be close but check specs on swiftechs site..
swiftech has always made top quality stuff. and i saw it fairly cheap in the usa but you know how the price changes over the ocean... so if thats the case
coolermaster has the eisbergh. only available in uk. again a closed loop cooler that can be upgraded..
either of those kits i think may be and option but price wise ...
the dual kit if they ship overseas.. would hopefully save you some cash.
Id be happy to discuss the other units here so we dont get the red-mod forum off topic..

i i really like that case you got tho.. (must not buy hardware.. must not buy hardware :>)

i did my first mod of a similar unit before i found a link for the dual cpu cooler.
and the bracket was a simple one with no fan options..
I cooled 2 6950's with the fat rad in the thermaltake water 2.0 pro. twice the thickness of the 620 or the lower end clcs..
but it took a lot of work as there was not a lot of into on anyone doing it.
i was going to get a res fittings etc.. in the end i cut the tube added a swiftech gpu block to one card
got two swiftech full cover heatsinks hd6900-hs that fit my cards as i was worried about vrms on the card ( not enough into when i did my mod) i had to heavily mod the one heatsink to fit the pump.
the heatsinks have places for fans so i had to get two special adapters from xoxcide to run the fans from the card (low wattage fans ) so the video card woutd change the speeds of the fans on the heatsink...

Great, after looking everything up and thoroughly going through the red mod club thread, I'm definitely going to go ahead and do this.

I think what I'll do, is get that antec CPU/GPU cooler, to cool the bottom card + the CPU, and then use the thermaltake 2.0 performer I'm using currently for the CPU, on the top GPU. I'll put the antec Rad at the back where the performer currently is, and the thermaltake 2.0 at the front. How does this sound? And could you confirm I've got everything I need in my shopping list?

1x Asetek 760GC Combo Liquid Cooler
2x Copper Shim: http://triptcc.com/product/copper-shim/
2x Bracket + fan option: http://triptcc.com/product/fan-bracket/

In terms of the rad located at the front, if do a push/pull config, the fan will prop the radiator far enough into the case so it should fit!

Thank you so much for the help sunset!

EDIT: Just realised the the combo liquid cooler only mounts nvidea cards - do you happen to know if the bracket can be replaced by a custom one, or is it built in?

that is my question. I have 2x 7970 CF in a FT03 case. They run 91 C on BF3.
Have an H80 on CPU.

Not a whole lot of room to work with but I could stack another 120mm Rad on outside of case.

Can the Asestek 760GC be modified for a 7970?
