My computer overheated?

Thread Starter
During a rigorous round of half-life 2, my computer suddenly reboot itself. When windows came up, i was informed that i had recovered from a serious hardware error, and that something might be wrong with:

psu
cpu
mobo
ram

and thats all the information i had. i opened up speedfan, and noticed that my gpu temp was 51C (iunno if thats high or not??), but everything else seemed normal.

recently i unplugged my chipset fan cuz it was freaking annoying (left the heatsink on tho), so maybe that was it??

and my mobo is set to turn off if the proc temp reaches 55C (i think, il hav to check) so maybe that was it. but that would be a shutdown, not a restart right? this was like someone pressed the reset button....

any suggestions? add more fans to case? iv got a few laying around....

I have had my CPU throttle on me because of heat but never actually had it shut down suddenly out of the blue from heat.

What fan did you take off?

Don't set the computer to shut off at 55C (unless semprons are really different that other stuff). You don't want it to go higher than that, but you should just have a warning so you know that it is that hot. It shouldn't just turn off from heat (unless its set too low) for a while.

Well It could be a variety of things..

Bad RAM
Hot CPU
Dodgy PSU.

Firstly lets check your CPU. Try running Speedfan to monitor your temps while running an App like Prime 95 to see how warm your CPU gets.

Yah, run Ramtest86 and let that do a few passes see if it finds any errors. you just burn it to CD or floppy and boot with it in and it'll do it for yah and tell you how many errors its found.

Check your Voltages of your PSU with a few methods to. Use Everest, BIOS, maybe your motherboard came with something like Asus Probe on its driver CD.

If your CPU was done it wouldn't not even turn on. And that temp for your GPU is alright. Not sure for an older card like that how that ranks for a temp for it, but it nvidia's can handle 60's no problem so that shouldn't be a problem.

Good Luck

If its the northbridge HSF, you should be able to use just a heatsink. Make sure it isn't dusty or anything. Also, monitor the temps when under load to make sure it isn't too hot.
