Four notes:

1. The aggregate professional rating on Metacritic went down again, from 79 to 76, probably with Destructoid's review score of 40. And let's not forget that many reviews by a lot of sites are still not posted as the reviewers still haven't been able to play the game.

2. EA clearly has no idea how to handle, let alone treat consumers.

Read this:
Quote:
A manager for EA's Korean Facebook page, meanwhile, seems to have risked angering an entire continent by mentioning that there are no local Asian servers for the game because "there is a lot of piracy in Asia, so it would be difficult for the time being" (as spotted and translated by Kotaku).

Isn't the game's always online feature supposed to exactly counter what they are afraid of ? I don't even have words to describe the absolutely ridiculous alacrity with which they make the most offensive (to not say something against the TOS) comments that make consumers even more angry. How inept can they possibly be ?

3 Their return policy is completely incoherent and actually encourages people to buy boxed products (from the article above):
Quote:
EA does offer a "14-day unconditional guarantee" on any physical product sold through the Origin store.

4. Also from the article above, EU consumers, make sure to exercise your rights, and consumers all around the world, demand equal and fair treatment:
Quote:
European customers, however, may be able to withdraw their downloadable purchase during a 14-day "Cooling Off period" as outlined on EA's European return policy page.

I have to say that the thing that most annoys me about EA is that the guys at the helm are the type of guys you can spot from a mile away that don't really care about what they are managing, as long as they make money. They could be in a food company, in a car company, in a hardware company, etc, it doesn't really matter.

You have to legitimately question if they actually like what they are doing, it's just that from their corporate talk I can't sense any passion, it's all very uptight language devoid of sincere passion for the game, respect for the gamers, and a sense of fairness, even from a single sentence I can sense the company's speech is determined by lawyers and disconnected management rather than being just conformed by lawyers (out of necessity). And when they do try to connect and be emotional, it seems forced, they really don't have it in them. They don't know how to tread the fine line between protecting their interests and having creative freedom and being able to express passion.

This always-on DRM stuff and license agreements in regard to SimCity are rather amusing. It's basically like buying a Lego set, but inside the box instead of Legos is a ridiculously long Terms of Agreement that you must sign and mail in prior to the Lego set being made available to you. And part of the agreement terms is that you can only play with the Lego set under direct supervision of Lego except that there aren't enough Lego employees to supervise everyone, so you must wait your turn until supervision is avaiiable. Then when the supervision is finally available they make sure you are only playing with the Lego set under strict rules that prevent you from being "too creative" with the Lego set, like combining it with other Lego sets or incorporating other creative ideas with it without their approval. Of course, as a toy consumer, instead of actually wanting to play with the Lego set you purchased, Lego will assume that you plan on copying the Lego set and reselling it because that's what all purchasers of toys do, right?

Could you imagine if normal toys were sold this way? That's essentially what EA is selling people.

The most amusing part of this is everyone knew the kind of DRM this game was going to have, bought it anyway and then are crying about it.

I'm seeing a lot of DRM talk, but is that even the reason why people can't connect?

Do I smell a class action lawsuit?

Anyone who rated this 4 or 5 stars is most likely a shill.

Amusing part is that there really isn't any additional DRM past Origin, it's the cloud computing that is the problem. Same way World of Warcraft doesn't really have DRM but still is always online.

Have you actually played the game? The gameplay is quite good and anyone with a shred of patience can see that the problems are temporary.

I saw this too, been debating if I should post it for the last half hour. It seems a little suspicious, a little known website getting the drop on one of the biggest stories that could come from this to date, let alone that staged conversation with a chinese worker, if he ever really existed.

I haven't been able to find any corroborating evidence for the post so far, but once I do I'll post it to the main feeds.

Most of the time. The DRM = having to connect to the servers and stay connected so you could stream your saved data. The servers can't handle the load therefore people can't play the game they spent $60 on.
