People were expecting a miracle, that it would work 100% right. That somehow all the compromise would be worth it, that somehow EA would make it work. Perhaps the passion people have for the game - and which far exceeds the passion EA has in doing things - became bigger than the DRM, after all it has been 10 years since the last one.

It was a big risk, and perhaps this was EA's last chance. From the proportions of this I think this time people really got majorly fed up. I don't agree that this will go away in a week, people were already on the verge and this was just the tipping point. We are talking about the core of a single player game being handled by EA's servers, this is a fundamental sticking point that won't go away next week.

But this also has one interesting aspect: EA decided to cash in on the Sims part of the game, perhaps thinking that a new SimCity game would only be successful if they could also target the new generation of gamers who play the Sims, and that the (now) adults that played SimCity had at least partially moved on. This also shows how disconnected they are from reality. If anything SimCity is one of those games adults don't have to feel guilty for playing, and like most adults, they know their rights and have a better understanding of what is fair and also of preserving gaming history, this whole problem made people finally realise the full implication of what this business model means, you didn't buy a game, you rented it and it will only work as long as others will also play - which is kind of ironic for what is at heart a single player game, or until EA releases the next version. And we are not talking about just authentication severs, the servers actually run part of the game, so the sooner EA switches them off to give room for something new, the better, the more cost savings for them, so forget about playing this game in 20 years like current 30 - 40 year old adults can with the original one.

No refund?

Everytime you post a negative comment about this game on Amazon, an angel get it's wings.

Imagine if the tables were turned, and you wanted to buy a game from EA, but didn't have the money just then "please EA, just give me a few days, I will have $60 for your AA title, but let me play it at your expense for these days".

Is Amazon hiding negative reviews??

Last night when this was first posted, amazon showed over 1,400 "1 star" reviews. Now it's up to 1,281.

What happened to the other 119 reviews?

Well I would expect it to work out of the box, but I've open all kinds of boxes to find items not functioning or missing pieces. I then only expect the manufacturer to fix the mistake ASAP...I don't open a lawsuit.

However, I would also expect the manufacturer to give me a refund if I return the broken item to them, but that is an issue with software in general...and not just EA.

Digital, software, or not, you are legally required to offer a refund or replacement if the product does not work, does not match the description, or is different to what was shown (advertised) to you.

EA cannot avoid it, and they should not try. The fact that they are shows that they are greedy and won't admit there is anything wrong with their product.
