Need Help with My First OC'd....Little Confused

post #1 of 12

Alright,

well this isn't the first system i've built but really the first that I want to OC. Let me tell you the system first then i'll get my issues out of the way:

Memory === G.SKILL 1GB (2 x 512MB) 240-Pin DDR2 667 (PC2 5400) (Timing 4-4-4-12) Dual Channel
CZ Gold Series 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 667 (PC2 5400) Dual Channel (Timing 4-4-4-12)

Storage=== 2 X Western Digital Raptor WD740ADFD 74GB (Raid 0)
Western Digital 320 GB (16 MB, 7200)
Western Digital 250 GB (16 MB, 7200)

Optical=== Samsung DVD +/- RW DL
Plextor DVD +/- RW DL

CPU === Pentium 4 650 (3.4 GHz)
Motherboard === MSI 955x Platinum
PSU === Enermax 600 W
Case === Thermaltake Armor Series

Video === EVGA 8800XTS (HAVEN'T BOUGHT YET….ANY ADVICE ON VIDEO CARD????)

I've read up on quite a bit of this but i'm still not sure on a couple issues. All the guides and advice i've read had talked about memory...but what if I have two different memory brands. I mean the timing and frequency is the same, but one is going to give out before the other...just not sure whether have 3 gigs is even worth it.

Also, I don't really understand what most of the guides have been saying about changing the RAM timing.

I understand changing the FSB and voltage for the CPU, but when it comes to the memory i'm not really sure what to do.

Any help would be great!! Also...any advice on what video card to get?? NEWEGG owes me 475 from RMA'ing my last card. EVGA any good or is the XFX better?

hey, welcome to the site. i been here a very short while, and i have learnt loads...

first up, have you already bought the P4 650 or still going to buy? if you still going to buy, really consider getting a Core 2 Duo, in the lines of an E6300 or E6400, they are so good..

2nd, memory, having different types of memory in the dual channel system means that the dual channel is not being utilised. it would be better if you just had the 2gb (2 x 1gb) running in the same channel, performance would probably be better... 3gb is alot to have for that cpu, you might as well install xp onto your RAM and then see how fast it would fly...

and then the video card, are you going AGP or PCI-e? hopefully you going pci-e, much faster, then in which case i would go with a XFX 7600GT or even a 7900GT card, they OC great and are really good performers. just make sure you have a good cooling system in place and those cards can really perform.

hope this helps a bit.. later...

Thanks both of you for your reply...

Yeah I bought the P4 650 awhile ago (3 months after it was released or so) and at the time didn't really do enough research. So i've kinda missed out on the Core 2 Duo's till I can get some more $$$.

How high can I go with the video card before my cpu starts to limit it? I was thinking of going high, just for upgrading down the road to something in SLI.

Also...I've read all the guides, but some contradict themselves; When i'm OC'ing, do I OC the processor first and see how high I can get. Or do I do the memory first and see how high I can get the FSB without the RAM failing??

What is your video card?the specs only say it's EVGA

That's the thing....right now I dont have one.

I'm just debating whether to get a GOOD video card for when I upgrade to Core 2 Duo or wether or not just to get a Nvidia 7 Series.

I RMA'd my last card, so right now i'm just using a PCI piece of ***** to get some school stuff done.

I'd get an 7 Series card and then buy the Core 2 Duo.

If you are on a budget, get a 7600GT, or if you can afford it, go with a Radeon X1950pro, or a 7900GT.

More of just a preference between NVidia and ATI I've noticed...although is there one that stands out above the other?

Also, what brand would you suggest? I've been looking at the EVGA 7900GT
