MC is 15 days on chips:
“Desktop / notebook computers, tablets, processors, motherboards, digital cameras, camcorders and projectors, and CD/DVD duplicators may be returned within 15 days of purchase.”

Two choices with a bad chip are to sell it and buy another, or get Intel’s oc plan:
http://click.intel.com/tuningplan/
and try to get a new one that way.

No guarantee the next will be better, but since yours is pretty bad I would do something to try another. I think any Ivy not doing 4.5 under 1.35v is worth returning.

Has anyone successfully used the Tuning Plan just to replace a chip that has a lousy OC? What do I say to them on the phone?

I have never used it, but I know you there is a 30 day waiting period after you buy it. It covers you ruining your chip from overvolting (at least for one single chip exchange) so I really don’t think they would care. Heck you could just send 2.0v into it and kill it, and they would exchange it. They have all the details in the link I listed.

I just purchased the Tuning Plan, so I guess I have 30 days to figure something out. In other news, the i5-3570K's are on sale for $189 at Microcenter stores today...

id say 4.2 is a decent/normal overclock with these chips, they are great overclockers,i just got the Hyper 212 from MC and decided to overclock i just overclocked to 4.2 took me all of 10 minutes, didn't even increment it i just pushed it directly to 4.2 no problem, instead of wasting time getting to 4.2 id say jump right up to 4.0 and go from there, saves alot of time. using the guide here: http://www.overclock.net/t/1198504/complete-overclocking-guide-sandy-bridge-ivy-bridge-asrock-edition you cant go wrong, even if you have a different board, just match up the values and give it a try.

im sure i can get to 4.4 or 4.5 ill have to check tonite thumb.gif

Without highend cooling and delidding you are going to be limited by temps. It all depends on your specific chip. Some need 1.25v for 4.4 and others can do 4.6 there, and some chips definitely run hotter than others.

Pretty much any of them can do 4.2 without issue. With high end cooling and a decent chip you can do 4.5 or 4.6. To go higher usually take delidding.

Which mobo do you have?

The absolute maximum temperature they can take is 105°C, but you shouldn't let it get anywhere near that. I personally like to keep mine below 70°C, but you could probably go up into the 80s without reducing the life of the chip.
