Powder coating vs. Spray painting

Thread Starter
Hello,

I'm looking into painting/powder coating my case and I need opinion on each method. I'm going to be using Prismatic powder if I do decide to powder coat my case. The main reason why I would rather spray paint is because I would not have to match the case powder coat and the painted components with each other. I want to paint my RADs and also my fans but I'm afraid of getting two different shades/variants of green. Any help would be appreciated.

Powder coats and professional paints use a harder that is mixed in right before painting. It makes the paint hard and cure which makes it much more durable. It resist scratching much better like car paint.

Spray paint has no hardner, it dries with air, heat, and time. It is not near as durable and scratches much easier. There is different quality of spray paints though. The $.99 cans verses the $9.00 cans should be a noticeable quality difference.

If you can't match the colors exactly, then maybe think about using two colors that compliment each other.

NOT exactly.
Powder uses heat, and the paint is actually a plasticized paint powder that melts at very high temps. You use no liquid hardener, and actually, if you introduce any moisture to the process you will ruin the finish. It is as hard as a professional paint that includes a primer and hardener, but it is NOT good for a surface that will flex because it can crack and chip (very brittle).
I might know a thing or two about powder coating..

My case being pulled out of the oven..

Some spray paints use no hardener and those are good for soft material where the paint can flex a little with the product (plastics, wood, etc)
Specialty spray paints can have a hardener, and these are usually for metal applications where the paint wont adhere very well and is prone to chipping. You would use a primer or etching primer to help the adhesion, to prevent this, and the hardener in the paint would also make a harder finish.

I stand corrected about the powder coating as seen above. redface.gif
I automatically think of powder coating as professional paint that does use a hardner. I intended to make the point that powder coating and professional paints hold up better than spray paints. Or they are more scratch resistant. People do not normally spend the money on professional painting for computers because of the cost. I personally have had good luck painting the radiators and other small things with Rustoleum paint. I have also used bedliner paint for trucks on many odd items with great success.

Another thing that I think is very important is taking the time to prep what you are painting very well. It can make a difference in the paint sticking and looking good.

Thanks for the info, guys. Can someone also recommend me an actual brand of spray paint that would be good for things like chassis? I want to paint plastic and aluminum.

I use etiching primer fist on metal. Do not use this on plastics.
Then I do light coats of the paint of my choosing smile.gif

Hey, thanks so much for clearing that up, guys. I went on the DupliColour website to see that colour variety but unfortunately (or fortunately for everyone else), there are many forms of paint to choose from. Juggalo, could you tell me every single type of Dulicolour paint you use? From start to finish? I'm sorry for being so noob, I've never been this adventurous when it comes to building PCs. This forum, and it's members, have really opened up a huge gateway for me!

Ive used duplicolor mirage kit.(changes from green to purple)
example. it is a 3 step process, base, color, then top coat.

The green NZXT Tempest above I used duplicolor etching primer, duplicolor metal cast, then duplicolor metallic green, then duplicolor top coat.
For the drive bays I used eitching primer then duplicolor black paint
