4-way 2011 motherboard

Thread Starter
Ok , seems I just did this.

I have 4 evga gtx 680 classified 's in sli I need a socket 2011 board for.

I would love to use my Xonar stx 1x pice sound card as well.

And please , if it has a CMOS reset switch not under the video cards ....

I am going to cut little corners this time around ...

P.s a easy over clock smoked my proc last time, and likely the board. (See sig)

Thanks again!

I think for most boards you will need to do a riser cable for the sound card w/ four way SLI.

My board in sig is the best in my opinion for 2011. I like Gigabyte a lot but for 2011 Asus would be the way to go. For z77 that might be debatable. I would go with Gigabyte if I had to go z77.

ASUS X79 Rampage IV Extreme is the best 2011 board.

I don't think you will be able to use the sounds card or use risers as there will be no space between the GPU's. The only way to use 4 GPU's and the sounds card would be to watercool the GPU's which in 4-way you should do anyway and with a 2011 chip.

Risers bend, You can get one under a GPU. And set the sound card under the case. You could even route one of the middle slots under two gpu's and have sound card dangling under all the gpu's if you use a 1x Riser the ribbon cable is pretty small.

If you're going to buy a Rampage IV Extreme, you had better hurry. Stock is low on them, and ASUS has discontinued the board.

The P9X79 WS isn't very flashy looking, but it's a solid performer and will do Quad SLI. It's basically a RIVE without the OC Key, the chipset fan, and the extreme overclocking and voltage measurement points. ASUS has also committed to several workstation manufacturers to guarantee a longer lifecycle on the X79 WS board. Something to think about.

I don't like the ASRock and Gigabyte X79 bios issues. ASUS has the best UEFI BIOS (in my opinion, and everybody has one of those, LOL).

And, there are NO X79 boards that will allow you to use your sound card AND 4x dual slot GTX boards, without the use of a riser cable. A lot of cases have "extra" slot covers below the bottom of the ATX board that you can use with the riser cable, or an extra slot cover suspended above the board (and perpendicular to the board itself) that can be used for the same purpose. Some creative rigging may be required.

Personally, I'd give strong consideration to using the on-board sound on a RIVE or one of the other premium Quad SLI compatible boards. Most have decent sound (e.g. ALC898 or Creative, etc). It's not quite a Xonar STX, but it's not that far off.

Where did you hear they have discontinued the RIVE board? I think this is just a rumour myself.

I went to newegg just now and added a 100 Rampage IV Extremes to my cart and 62 were available.

And on that note, the RIVE is the board to get.

Another option if you can't buy the RIVE the logical step down is the Rampage IV Formula , cheaper, ATX form factor, and the only big thing you lose is the 4 Dimm slots but a Gamer wouldn't need more than 4 Dimms anyway.

WS looks like a fine substitute to RIVE on the surface but it have a weaker VRM, while the RIVE/F have 8 phase CHIL8328 PWM chip controlling the 8 phase VRM, the WS only have a 4 phase PWM doubled to 8 phase.
