Newer LCD worse than older Plasma

Thread Starter
Hello, I was wondering if someone can explain to me why my 40 inch lcd that I bought last year has a much blurrier and much more pixalated picture than my parent's 5 or so year old plasma tv? Their out of town so I thought I'd play games on their tv and well it's got a much better picture than mine. Their both samsung my lcd is a 550, not sure about the plasma, I have them both on the same settings and im using the same games to compare. If anyone can shine some light on this, I would really appreciate it, thanks.

Well for one it all comes down to the resolution, and that plasma may very well have a higher res than your lcd. Age doesn't always benefit. Also, be aware that plasmas burn in quite fast where as lcd's do not, so I wouldn't plan on playing anything long term on that tv. You are going to ruin it.

Yeh, I only played for an hour or so, and I've kinda figured out that only a few games look better, they are both 1080p screens but BlackOps 2 looks better on the Plasma, I'm pretty sure I can just change some settings on my lcd to improve the picture a tad, thanks for the reply though.

Problem, more or less "SOLVED"

Have you tried "Sharpness" options or whatever your TV calls them?

All 1080p TVs are not made the same. If I had to guess, I'd say the model of LCD you bought has high latency and unfit to be used for gaming. Try poking around in the menus and shut off all of the "features" or look for a "game mode" option.
the "refresh rate" on a LCD is also much different than how a plasma works. Often screen lag occurs and causes the blur you are talking about.

That said, I would never buy a Plasma as a gaming monitor due to the risk of burn in. It is not something that happens much anymore, however, when playing a game that has a solid health bar or compass at the bottom for hours on end could result in a little image retention that may take a while for it to go away.

i have a plasma (42in 1080P panasonic viera ) that i use as a 2nd monitor, i play games on it ,watch movies, sometimes even use it as a primary screen if im feeling a little lazy, i do get image retention if the screen is set to be bright and colorful but never enough to really show unless you display alot of black on the screen so you can see it. if you want to avoid image retention simply turn the brightness down, when doing that the slight image retention that occurs is so little that its almost impossible to see.

and as for your LCD i would agree with Electrocutor look for a game mode option or turn contrast down (seems to help because the pixels dont get as much color so it takes less time to change to another) also you might consider the LCD input lag, are you using composite (yellow red white) or HDMI?

Plasma is a better technology for picture quality.

Honestly it is quite hard for a LCD to overcome a plasma in image quality. Why you expected anything different is beyond me.

Plasma just makes a poor monitor because of burn-in, but don't worry about that unless your displaying a static image for long periods of time.

Also Plasma seems more fluid because

completely agree, love my plasma xD not the newest (about 2010) but it still has a better picture than most tv's i see in stores, and as for burn in lower birghtness=less image retention so if you're like me and just have to use a plasma with your computer/game thats a good thing to know.
