Choosing RAM concerning use and hardware !

Although there are many threads about choosing RAM for an Intel 3770K processor, I wanted to get a more specific answer for my case.
Considering my hardware:

CPU: Intel 3770K
Motherboard: Asus Maximus V Extreme
GPU: Asus NVidia GeForce GTX 680 DirectCU II TOP (not so important anyway)

and use:

gaming
programming
mathematical calculations, models and plotting
3D models
photo-video-editing
(and movies, music… etc.)
I forgot to tell you that I am an undergraduate student. So do not imagine extraordinary things. Maybe serious work but not professional...

I was thinking about a 16gb RAM. I do not know if it is pointless or I will need more. Where I cannot make up my mind, is about speed.
To be honest, I do not know a lot about RAMs, so any comments about latency, XMP and voltage, would be hard for me to understand unless you put it simply.

Thank you in advance.

16GB of DDR3-1600 would be fine for you. Extra RAM is quite good for heavy work.
If you want to overclock some, look at 2000-2400MHz options. Performance difference is negligible, though.

So I would not notice any "remarkable" difference between 1600MHz and 2133MHz concerning price difference ?
