HELP!! Q6600 * 3.6GHz @ DFI LanPart DK P45 T2RS PLUS

post #1 of 12
Thread Starter
Hello everyone.
I'm a noob in OC.
I had a q9300 and changed it with a q6600 for better oc performance
I've managed to get to 3.6 but 1 core crashes after a few minutes of BLEND testing in PRIME95, besides that core crashing i can still use my pc as i normally would, without any BSOD and other errors but the temp is still kinda of high.
Could you please tell me some advices for my setup ?

Q6600 3.6GHZ 9x400 @ DFI LanParty DK P45 T2RS PLUS FSB:DDR 1:1
4x2 GB Kington KyperX PC8500 @ 800
Corsair 650w
CPU Cooler Akasa Nero

ANY SUGGESTIONS?

Thanks in advance

Poke around in here, there are a few templates and some good links.
Mine is long gone and I can't recall any helpful info.

Since you can reach 3.6 Ghz on your Q6600, you probably have a G0 revision, which means it is supposed to be a good overclocker (earlier Q6600 revisions could hardly go over 3.2 Ghz).

Before anything else, what is your default DDR2 ram voltage and what are the default timings? Check it out on the RAM stickers.

Since you have PC8500s, you can do something nice and set the "CPU clock" (FSB) to 450Mhz and the "CPU clock ratio" to 8x, keeping the DRAM speed @ 450/950 Mhz, and achieving an overall frequency of 3.6 Ghz on the CPU. This will result in a higher data bandwidth and overall better performance.

I am typing from my trusted DFI P45-T2RS and my Q6600 G0, which I keep at a stable 3.6 Ghz (400x8). I can't get it any higher because of my RAM (4x1GB Corsair XMS2 PC6400 @ 800 Mhz 4-4-4-10).

edit: I have the LP model of the motherboard, which is an earlier version compared to the DK PLUS, so yours should be a better performer/overclocker smile.gif

@FIX_Tornado - hello bro.
Nice to hear that someone else is still using this mb. This is from the specs of my ram

Each module pair has been tested to run at DDR2-1066MHz at a latency timing of 5-5-5-15 at 2.2V. The SPD is programmed to JEDEC standard latency 800Mhz timing of 5-5-5-18 at 1.8V.

I'd love to see some screenshots of the voltages that you use.
Thank you.
I'm from mobile not @ home I'll RE later on.

Well 81C is pretty hot. That could lead to instability right there. Secondly, how does the chip do at 3.5Ghz under the same voltage?

As pointed out by FlawleZ, your CPU temps are quite high.

Try working with the FSB (there's people who have achieved 500Mhz and above, so I'd say 430/450 Mhz should be feasible for you) and use the 8x multi, decrease the CPU VID add by one step, set the RAM timings to auto and keep the DRAM voltage control @2.1/2.2 volts. Even if you don't reach a 3.6Ghz overclock, you'll have similar performance at lower temps/cpu voltage.

pff my ram when it runs @ 800Mhz it only needs 1.8V why go on 2.1/2.2 ?

Maybe check the mount on your cooler.
You could lower the vcore a notch probably.
It could just be the RAM timings are not set manually.
I set the skews to 200 for cpu and 400 for NB.
Your board doesn't have a lot of chokes..may not be the bestest for quads.
Make sure there's a fan directly on the VRM sinks and NB.
I think you could use a little more NB voltage as well;
maybe some VTT, too.
