Advice needed on 2 x 4870x2 cards

Hi guys,

Video hardware is one part of computers I just can't keep up with. At the moment I got a 3.2 i7 with 16gb ram, ssd, a dell 3011 (2560x1600) and 2 x 4870x2's in a crossfire.

Problem: they produce too much heat and the old girls just can't keep up with some of the newer games. Can anyone recommend a card that will be better than these two put together? Effectively what I want is a 1 card (so I can stick a second one in down the track) which will be better than the two that I have.

Any help appreciated. Thanks.

From what I can tell by a quick google search, a 7970 should be around what you want. There are a few other choices, but this is the best budget friendly choice at your res.

What is your budget?

I don't really have too much of a budget, but I'd go up around $6-700

I paid like $800 or something from my distributor the day the 4870x2 came out. That was quite a while ago, now thinking about it - 5 odd years ago...

Ok, A titan is the best single gpu but costs $1000. A 7970 is around $400-$500 and a 680 is $450-$550.

The best value card right now is the 7950 for around $300, it overclocks very well and comes with two free games right now.

Here is a benchmark, the 7950 is almost as good @ stock and just as good overclocked. But the other cards can be overclocked as well.

Hope this helps.

I have 2 msi tf3 7950's and the top one only gets to 75c. Two cards would be great for you at your resolution. Any two fan cooler should be fine, just get one with unlocked voltage. I believe the Sapphire has it unlocked. The msi tf3 cards I have it is locked, but very high lock. I maxed out the sliders in ccc and it worked great.

Not all cards will do this but almost all will come close.

Awesome. Just bought the sapphire ones. Didn't get any extra cooling just yet. I don't think the arctic chilling pipes are long enough to get to my case fans.

Thanks guys!
