AMD's HSA APU's have the potential to greatly surpass anything that intel is able to put out. The problem will be getting the support of developers to update their software to support HSA.

In my opinion AMD is one of the most exciting tech company's right now.

Depending on how this whole GDDR5 for desktops works out, I might go AMD for my budget gaming rig I'm planning to build later this year biggrin.gif

Very excited for what AMD pulls off with the unified memory and HSA as well.

I'm guessing GDDR5 will be for embedded systems, both consoles basically. This would drastically increase what could be done on a console. Though we do see DDR4 out now, so we might see DDR5 sooner rather than later. That or DDR4 might give nice improvements on the desktop world. I guess we will have to wait and see.

the AMD APU's have been killer and really filled an opening in the market, on the other hand will we ever get a new socket for the "high end" CPU's? i get backwards compatibility but really AM3+ still?
2 to THREE computing units? Does that mean we effectively get SIX cores in our APUs?!

If true, good riddance desktop! You served well but I'm keeping my AIO as my main system. Big, noisy and power hungry monsters? No thanks!

And GCN cores is just the icing on the cake!

BSN just made my day a lot happier thumb.gif

AMD said last year they were shifting resources towards APUs (I can understand that fairly well), but that doesn't mean that desktop processors won't get the improvements we see in APUs... Talk about Steamroller, for example. thumb.gif

The socket is not a problem if the chipset is updated according to the CPU cores to maintain maximum throughput.

Steamroller will be the last architecture for AM3+.

Also, going forward, all "high end" AMD CPUs will be APUs with HSA.

AMD article on HSA.

Short Anand article.

Basically it means fusing the CPU and GPU together so the GPU becomes the CPU and boosts calculating output by several factors, resulting in Terraflop CPU's.
