....

Yes. The gameplay of StarCraft 2 is epic, the cinematics are really good, and the game design is superb, and the multiplayer is intuitive and fun. For a story junkie like me sadly, Wings of Libery and Heart of the Swarm could have been more - there were infuriating continuity errors as well as other story flaws. They tried to smash too much story into too little game play. I beat StarCraft II HoTS in the first 10 hours it was released, but it wasn't like StarCraft or StarCraft BroodWar. I blame this entirely on the writers being different between the games.

Never have I felt such feelings when characters were killed. My god, when you teeter over that edge in the beginning of episode 1? Or how you rush to stop the reactor because you DONT WANT City 17 and all of its inhabitants to explode, not simply because the game makes you? Or how engaging the beginning of HL2 is? How it sucks you into the world of the Combine, and the violence that entails? The tensions of escaping the police after the teleporter malfunctions? The passing through ravenholm? When you think Dog is gone forever, only for him to come saving you later on? The double agent status of Mossman, and her betrayal and subsequent redemption? The showdown between Breen and Freeman? The G-Man and all of his mysteries? Later on, the death of Eli in front of his daughter, possibly the only man who knows the secret to the Borealis and the key to beating the Combine?

This game is 1984 translated into video game. Since I think 1984 is arguably the best book ever written, I cannot help but feel the same way about HL2 and its episodes.

Someone said metro in response, but honestly i didn't give two dumps what happened to those characters. Alyx Vance's death, however, would admittedly make me weep. I mean jesus, when she gets stabbed by the hunter? Holy crap, I was FREAKING OUT.

I've never freaked as hard over any character in any game, ever, than I have in HL2 when one of my favorite characters is in danger.

I didn't just want to beat and win the game, no, that was not enough. I wanted to win and save the inhabitants of City 17, the Vortigaunts, the oppressed peoples. I WANT TO SAVE all of Earth. I forget I'm playing a game when I play HL2.

Having said all of this, it should make sense to anyone why I feel HL2 is the best story in any FPS.

Also I said definitely the best story out of any FPS, and only possibly the overall best. Though I would probably be able to make that argument if it weren't for a few N64, GameCube games. Nintendo definitely has the best stories out of any consoles.

Yeah HL2 does an excellent job at creating a world, and does a good job at making characters especially for an FPS. You might want to take a step forward and try Dragon Age and Mass Effect; nothing comes close to these (especially DAO) when it comes to character development. Though I still feel that nothing approaches Silent Hill 2 in terms of the writing.
