Best story driven games ? - Page 8

I really enjoy the CHARACTERS.
Then I love the atmosphere.
First person shooter combat is tertiary, even.

So while I know not everyone adored the mass effect trilogy, I have to say, there were many, many memorable characters who were deeply developed through the saga. Someone discussing the witcher 3, said that he measured games by how many characters he could remember by the end. Skyrim had some pretty ineffective people/ you don't *bond* with anyone. Even your wife, and your companion, are just following you with no development. Your wife has like 5 canned, brainwashed sentences in her vocabulary. The vampiress in the first big expansion had the longest story.
Whereas ME has a veritable saga across like 90 hours of gameplay, and you really know the crewmembers who carry over from 1 to 3. They're brought to life.

I enjoyed dragon age 2, also. Each party member had a backstory. The ending to the plot... well, I was disappointed that your decisions ultimately had no effect. But that was my one (significant) gripe.
Never tried DA1! I should.

A friend just told me to play chronotrigger, hah! With an easy emulator, runs just fine on windows 7. Can barely get over the graphics, though smile.gif
Just started replaying baldur's gate, too. BG1 is... boring. No character conversation. But I remember (and have been reminded) that BG2 has much more intercharacter dialogue.

Skyrim is beautiful, beautiful, beautiful
No character development.

Borderlands 2 is hilarious at times.
But reminded me of why I got bored with mmorpgs categorically-- no character development. Plot I guess so, real deep dialogue, no.

Dishonored was pretty cool too. Story was shallow and cliche (save the girl! +vengeance. every action movie of the last 30 years), characters were sometimes rich, sometimes no. But steampunk setting was just awesome. Had a lot of fun with a sneak-'em-up (pun on shootemup): gameplay was creative and never really got dull.

Far Cry 3 I loved for the gorgeous scenery, just like skyrim. The gameplay was exciting, too; with every platform puzzle a good break also.
But again, not much character development. 3-4 memorable characters in the whole game, and you don't watch them grow/mature/live&breathe.
Not to be an ME fanboy, but I really do look forward to more video games that read like novels. Witcher 3 is supposed to impress in that category. Witcher 2 is supposed to be like that already (I need to play it!)

How is fallout? I actually don't like post-apocalypse... but if the story is excellent, and the characters rich?

You have some good points but I have to disagree with you on some. Dragon Age 2 is so much worse than the first. The first has a fantastic story with non-button-mashing gameplay, DA2 story was utter crap.
Borderlands 2 while fun, doesn't qualify for a story based game. BL2 is cmical and lively but not deep.
Play the first Witcher
Than play the second.
They are fantastic games with an actual mature driven storyline. And when I say mature I don't mean nudity. If nudity adds to the effect of a scene and story then cool, otherwise it is immature. And The witcher does a fantastic job in that balance.
And I agree that while it is easy to get lost in the scenery and landscape of Skyrim, the game (like all elder scrolls games) has no story, but that is not why we play it.

Dragon age origins is one of the best games of all time. DA2 is pathetic by comparison.

Oblivion was better than skyrim to me, and graphically can be modded to HD.

Never winter nights is another option, Since you don't seem to be turned off by old games. I also Highly highly recommended Deus Ex, the conspiracy.

As far as story goes, DA:O is a no brainer the next game you need to play.

Q4T if you actually LIKED DA2, then you might not even want to play DA:O because it will completely ruin your opinion of DA2 biggrin.gif it's like comparing playstation3 vs playstation1 biggrin.gif

Good choice! thumb.gif A good first pick, one of the best stories I've played in the last year.

If I'm gonna pick just one, I'm gonna give a massive +1 for Spec Ops: The Line. The game is wearing a thick "samey modern combat simulator" disguise, but beneath it; it's essentially a very, very nonstandard horror game. If you can find it for $10 or less, definitely get it. I know it would be hard to convince you, given it's not a strong shooting game and is not so long or replayable, but: I will say that knowing what I do now about it, I'd easily pay $30 for it.
