Run program from HTML web page

Thread Starter
Hi OCN, I'm sorry I don't contribute much to this part of the site, but I am still learning much code!

I recently had the idea to have my new tab page be an HTML page that will have buttons to click to launch certain local programs (such as eM Client, GIMP, WinSCP, etc). I have a hosting plan at namecheap.com and host it there if it matters if it's local or hosted. I can't for the life of me find a way to do this by googling around. Most posts are from ~2004 and things have changed since then, so they aren't of much help.

Does anyone here have anything they could offer to help me along?

just remember new html code is still backwards compatible so commands that worked then still work now.
I use to know the code to launch a local program. But, its been far to long and I have forgotten it.

I found it online actually its a small script linked to the button
it wont let me post the code here. Here is a link to it.

You can run this locally. No need to have it hosted.

It won't work if you try it remotely (i.e. hosted) anyway.

The link in the first response won't work for most browsers either. It uses an ActiveX object which is Internet Explorer only. Chrome, firefox, safari and every other maker has no support for it. You're unlikely to find any workarounds either as it breaks the browser security model.

If its for your own use, just make desktop shortcuts.

This is a polished solution that also supports stuff like listing of local files and workstation shutdown. Most other solutions are a huge security risk in the corporate environment, this can be locked down to a domain with AD. Pretty groovy.
