One computer's internet much slower than the other

Thread Starter
My computer's internet just started slowing down, significantly, within the past hour or so. I ran a speedtest and had my roommate do the same, he got about 14mbps and I got .65mbps. I'm using a Gigabyte PCI WLAN card, he's using a wireless dongle. My drivers are up to date according to Windows. What could be causing this? Just one wall and about eight feet of air separating my PC and the router, always have full signal, and this only just started happening.

Seems like it was my WLAN card, I plugged in my cheapo generic USB dongle and connected with that, and I get much better speed.

For the record a PCI/PCI-E x1 WiFi card will do better then a USB...usually. If it has a big nice Antenna anyways it should.

Okay maybe that's to big, but it would get killer range lol

I'd fork out a couple bucks for a proper PCI Wireless card. You can get a good PCI-Express (that little runt PCI slot that nothing uses) WiFi card for $30 or so on Newegg. I have a Rosewill one that works just fine.

I just decided to go wired. Sure, there's a big ugly blue cable running through my apartment now, but at least I can watch a Youtube video while downloading a Steam game now.

Could be whoever is fighting for the speed.
Also what is your link rate depending on the frequency it can be running in 20mhz vs 40mhz on the adapters.

Also be sure you are communicating on a non-congested WLAN channel.

Please download InSSIDer for your WLAN client and from there you will get to see who is using what channel and you can from there, configure your router to use one that nobody else is using.
If the antenna of the PCI card is on the back of the case, facing away from the router. It will usually lower the quality of the connection that it receives from the router, which can lessen the speed. This also happened to me because I use a USB dongle and I needed for it to be on the front panel so that it will have a better connection(The strength of the signal didn't change)
It's a computer.
