7970 Direct CUII No Dual-link DVI output

Thread Starter
So, I recently purchased an Asus 7970 Direct CUII Top card from a member here. I hooked it all up to my 2560x1440 monitor and... nothing happened. It didn't display anything. So, I hooked it up to my tv and it displayed everything fine. I installed the newest drivers and still no go. I tried turning the switch on the graphics card to allow for Dual link DVI, but it didn't work. So, I think that the card isn't outputting dual link DVI and I see that others have had similar problems. I'm not sure where to go to from here. Maybe I should try to find newer bios and try to flash those or something? I'm not sure what to do. Has anyone else had similar problems or any ideas on how to fix it? Thanks for any help. frown.gif

I'm so sorry I hadn't seen this before, normally I'm never in the AMD section and just general forums but I had more than extensive experiences in this field with these exact cards and my own OC Catleap with dual link DVI.

http://www.overclock.net/t/1337174/asus-rma-7970-dc2-posible-matrix-if-i-push-or-gtx-680-dc2-4gb/0_100

http://www.overclock.net/t/1345827/finally-back-from-rma-my-7970/0_100

Basically you can do what I did and try about 15 different bios files and find out it doesn't work or just RMA the card. To best honest as you can see from my first post I've researched it quite a bit and if you head over to the Asus ROG forums and look through the forums there many people have had the same experience.

I got mine turned into a matrix but know that even these have a few issues with dual link DVI's and my current one has weird spazz out moments. I'll PM with a couple of links to some youtube vids I made for their CSRs as examples.

Your only real options are to return the card to the seller (he didn't know and it is in no way his fault most likely), work with him see if he can provide you with proof of purchase and then try to RMA that way if it hasn't been registered or work with him if he already registered it. Though if you'd like I actually PM'd a few people that had working dual link DC2T's and have a few copies of their bios around here somewhere if you wan't to try those before doing anything else. Let me know, good luck.

I don't mean to sound like a middle school teacher, but you should never buy second hand cards, it doesn't matter how good the price is. The extra money that you pay for a new card is for 'security'. That's personally just the way I see it. Had you bought that card brand new, you would've been able to RMA it asap, would've had your own proof of purchase, no problem. Now you have to chase after some Joe who doesn't 'have' to help you out post sale.

Sorry this happened to you, hope you get it fixed.

Thanks man. I appreciate your help a lot. The next thing I was going to try is to use an active display port to dvi adapter. The seller has one and is willing to send it to me for free to see if that works. If not, he said he will take back the card. The problem is that I would go with another card altogether, but I already purchased the water block and everything I need to put it under water. I'm hoping that the DP to DVI adapter will work and all will be well. Until then though, I would be very appreciative if you could get a hold of a bios of someone who has a working dual link DVI. I would like to try that and see if it helps. Is it a difficult process to flash the bios to this card? I haven't had to do something like this yet. Also, out of curiosity, was your card voltage locked? It seems as if mine is and Asus GPU tweak won't let me raise the speeds above 1125/6300. If none of this works, I am considering selling my crossover altogether and buying a Dell U2712hm (can use displayport with this), but that will be my last resort. I may be upgrading to a second DCII card in the future. I was thinking, if I buy that soon, I can use that one as my main card. If that one displayed dual DVI then I would be set and if it didn't, I could simply RMA it (this one I will buy new lol).

@iTzHughie
Thank for your concern. Thankfully, the seller is being very helpful with getting this resolved. I've had really good luck with used items in the past, so I wasn't too concerned. However, this will likely be the last time I buy a second hand component for my PC. You are right, the security and ease of warranty is likely worth more than the $130 or so I saved buying it second. Hopefully, all will work out fine.

At work but wanted to answer while I have a quick second.

My card was not voltage locked but it had I modified bios and stock it did have come with it locked.

Flashing is relatively easy but during the 8th flash or so I hit a hick up where for some reason something when wrong and I soft bricked the card. The pc was fine but gpu didn't give any video, I moved it to the second slot put in a gtx 460 and re-flashed it, pulled out the 460 and it booted fine. The reason I bring that up is because I literally tried 12-15 bios and on the 8th it bricked but the file was fine and method identical to the previous 7 but still something went wrong. The risk for flashing, even if everything is done perfectly, is always there but ultimately mostly safe. Just make sure to have a second gpu handy incase the flash goes wrong and you need to do it again.

As for the adapter, I borrowed one from a friend (active) and it worked fine but the one I owned previously (passive) did not. So if it's an active dual link dvi dp adapter it will work, if it's an passive it won't, and if it's an active single link dvi to dp it will also fail. The active dual link adapters start at about 100 bucks and pretty much anything cheaper will not work.

Now I'm a big bang for buck guy so I wouldn't advise on getting the Dell unless you actually work in a field that requires exceptional color reproduction. If you're main field is gaming then then there are still cheaper options like the monoprice screen that has multi, an overlord oc monitor 1440, or even a blazing fast 120/144Hz 1080 screen. They each have their pros and cons but those Dell's while great quality monitors are not something a gamer should really buy unless he dabbles in one of those perfect colour fields.

Thanks for the advice. I appreciate it. Good to hear the monitor worked fine with the active DP to DVI adapter. I will give that a shot. I'd also like to try a bios to at least unlock the voltage and let me push it further. If you can get a hold of one for me, I would really appreciate it. Thanks!!

http://www.overclock.net/t/1303719/asus-hd-7970-dc2t-3gd5/0_100#post_18455617

Here's another attached to a post. Can't find the ones on the rig though, I had about four more from people but I've formatted twice since my DC2T bios test faze so maybe I never moved them out. frown.gif

These would be some of them though, just not directly from folks;

6798.15.23.0.2.AS01.U3

6798.15.17.0.1.AS04.U2

6798.15.23.0.2.AS01.U2

6798.15.17.0.1.AS02.U2

6798.15.12.0.4.AS09.U2

6798.15.12.0.4.AS09.U3

6798.15.12.0.4.AS05.U3

6798.15.12.0.4.AS05.U2

Also here's two links to OC unlocked BIOS, I use one of the links but don't remember which. (they look to be same file just uploaded six months apart)

http://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/113309/Asus.HD7970.3072.120104.html

http://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/123175/Asus.HD7970.3072.120104_1.html

Here's a link to the main page with all the ASUS 7970 BIOS but I've already linked you the DC2T's one the rest are for the non Top, reference, and Matrix Platinum (normal one as well).

http://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/index.php?page=1&architecture=ATI&manufacturer=Asus&model=HD+7970&interface=&memSize=0

LMAO forgot ATI flash and stuff tongue.gif

To flash here's a link for the files you'll need

http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/showthread.php?t=57750

In that thread get the HP USB Format Tool 2.2.3 and DOS Start Files (win98boot)

and download the latest atiflash here: http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/2166l/atiflash_399.zip the one in the thread is a little old.

Now just follow the 2 step on the Techpowerup forums to make a usb bootable drive then copy the atiflasher.exe inside the zip you downloaded and also copy the BIOS inside zips (as in unzip files and program). Now restart your pc and change your boot options to have the usb as your first priority.

The commands you'll need are http://www.overclock.net/t/640063/unofficial-how-to-flash-ati-cards/0_100

Mostly

atiflash.exe -s 0 backup.bin
and
atiflash.exe -f -p 0 newbios.bin

are what you need to know.

Remember you can also make a back up of your bios with GPU z and when flipping the little switch for the bios change make sure you only do it when the PC is off and and power cycle it once before you start it. So in essence you turn pc off, flip switch, turn pc off let the BIOS screen appear then turn it off again, now boot it up fully. That's just to make sure the GPU switches BIOS.

Oh and when you make the backups name them somethign like "towards back" or "towards mobo" so you remember what side each bios is in. Sorry for the UBER long post tongue.gif oh and the voltage on the OC BIOS goes up to 1.4 instead of the base max of 1.182.

Btw sorry it took me a bit to respond, I work grave on the west coast so usually don't wake up till 4pm-ish PST. Good luck.

I have a 7970 DCII and the bottom dvi port is dual link... You have to flip the small black switch on top pf the card by the crossfire connectors to disable one of the DP ports.... If you got the retail box the bottom right on the back will show the switch and the 2 modes

sigh i read everything in the thread but must have skipped over the small part in the OP my bad

Interesting that your having issues with no display on your Crossover though as i just sent mine off for rma for not working with mt yamakasi 30"...

Unfortunately The DCII 7970 is known to have issues displaying an image that's actually there or non corrupt on anything over 1080p on the DVI-D port.

Mine for example has green pixels all over the screen, i have been through 4 cards and ALL did the same yet when i use a DP to DVI-D Apple Adapter it works fine so i know my monitor is not at fault and my cables fine.

the thing is i could keep sending them back and getting a new card, but i need my pc up and running and don't need the hassle.

Plus my card is voltage unlocked used 2.2.1.4 GPu tweak and does 1280/1850 all day long/

I doubt you will find a DCII 7970 that has a perfect DVI-D port, 4/4 i tried failed.

This is pretty much true, during my time with it I basically found only a handful of people with working DC2T's WITH 1440+/120hz screens who used DVI (a lot of folks love their DP capable Dells QHD screens and Sammy/Asus 120/144hz screens tongue.gif ) most with the card either use DP or run single link since they only use 1080 screens so it's not a huge problem. We're the minority of the minority so I can understand why most don't hear about it. but yeah RMA will not help unless you want to be without a PC for a couple of months and switch over to a 680 like they offered a few of us. tongue.gif
